Dang that's a lot of time spent traveling...and I had to comment on the intermodal movie title, "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles," because I'm a product of the 80s.

I typically avoid outbound LAX flights between 9am-11am because the traffic really piles up through Long Beach, Carson, and Lawndale. I would strongly recommend leaving no later than 6am. My wife and I typically head up early and get a bite to eat at Panera in Westchester or Randy's Donuts. My aunt insists of hiring a car service or she stays at the airport Hilton the night before.

If there is one of you 6AM if there is 2 of you 630AM since you can carpool a bit.

Why not consider Uber for 615 pick up I think it's $40-50 a way and you aren't going to save yourself that much on parking, I think, depending on where you park.

We went international at 930 left at 6, but it was close because of an accident on 405, then Joes Garage/parking had to stop at a hotel first before dropping us off, didn't advertise that one.

If I want to check in at 9am, what time should I leave Tustin?

7:00am ?
As someone else mentioned, checking in at 9 AM for a flight that will start boarding at 9:30 is cutting it way too close. Last time I flew out of LAX in the early morning, I skipped breakfast, thinking I'd have time to get something at the airport. Wrong. TSA line was long, food places all had long lines, and gate was a mile away. I barely had a minute by the time I got to the gate. (Then figured I'd order one of those boxes on the plane....fell asleep when they came around with the food cart, then when I woke up, the food was all gone. I had to survive a 5-hour flight to the East coast on a 2-pack of Mounds.)

Faster than driving during rush hour. Maybe you should try it.

Nah, that would take me awhile door-to-door. My nearest Metrolink station is in Tustin or Santa Ana. My wife use to take it to Union Station once a week when she worked in DTLA (now in Century City). Yesterday, she had a deposition in San Diego so I picked her up in Santa Ana at 5:15pm and drove to her holiday party in Santa Monica. It only took 1.25 hrs from Santa Ana, but it took my 50 minutes to get to Santa Ana on the 55 fwy (50 minutes to go 8 miles!).

Yes it really depends on your location. I live a mile from a Metrolink station So is a great option to have.
