I am contemplating taking a job in Long Beach, near the Waterfront/Aquarium of the Pacific area. Trouble is, my wife does not want to live in Long Beach at all. I'm looking for towns that are within a hour commute to my job.

My job is pretty much M-F 8-4:30 +/- a bit. I'm in my late 40s, she's in her mid 30s, and we both prefer access to good food and drink and safe neighborhoods to walk our dog. We don't have kids.

We both currently live in the Bay Area and I know a bit about traffic in the LB area in general, but not enough to know what is a realistic radius to look in. I know very little about OC in comparison to LA County so wanted to get some input. Are Orange/Fullerton/Irvine realistic?

Thanks for any and all help!

How about Seal Beach, HB, Fountain Valley. I used to work in Long and lived in Fullerton. Irvine is not too bad either but it’s expensive.

Stick with northern Orange County.
Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Anaheim, Garden Grove, Fountain Valley.

Any further south than that would be a painful drive.

How's the safety in those communities? How rough is the commute to LB from irvine or Fullerton?

It’s OC, in general most area are safe. I think much safer than Long Beach. I used to commute from west park of Irvine to Seal Beach, next to Long Beach, it’s about 30 minutes for me. I’m a slow driver. If you live in a Irvine it’s reverse commute. Most people have jobs in Irvine, UCI is a big employer. South of Irvine is not recommended, I think the bottleneck is near Irvine Spectrum.

As bad as traffic is in the Bay Area, SoCal is even worse. LA takes the cake, but OC is not far behind. Depending on budget, Long Beach has some nice neighborhoods where it’s safe to walk at night. There’s no reason to commute an hour when you can stay well within that limit and still live in a nice area.

So why aren't you looking in Belmont Shore/ Belmont Heights / Alamitos Beach?

As I mentioned in my OP, my wife does not want to live in LB at all, including Belmont or Alamitos. truth be told, she also didn't like Seal Beach either. Maybe one of the interior towns would be better.

Fair enough. It probably would help if you explain what she doesn't like about those areas as that will let others give you recommendations on areas to avoid.
