Lived in the OC for 16 years and only 1x did we find an apartment by using the newspaper or online. Imho, the most expensive places are usually the ones listed in the newspaper which can be outrageously priced. That doesn't mean you won't or can't find one in the newspaper or online, but the best way is to drive into a neighborhood you want to live in and just drive around, up and down the street. There will always be some kind of sign in the window or near the mailbox. Usually the landlord will meet you there within a few hours, so its not a waste of time (unless they are out of town or a relative is handling the property for the landlord and just taking messages). Sometimes you'll find several places for rent in the same block, next block, nada. Drive through if you can.
