I remember the first time I had ever heard of Cypress, CA. I was about 10 years old and got hold of some phone sex number. My dad confronted me when the bill came, "what's this, it's $40 from Cypress California?"

I'm resurrecting this topic because I have an urgent question regarding this policy. A friend, because of the current economy (sad, so close to the holidays), can't afford Belmont anymore but has a child in middle school, not high school, in Belmont Heights. Can she still send her kid there if she moves to another apartment somewhere else in LB? Thanks.

Check out Los Alamitos. I think it's perfect for your situation. It's a small city but very well patrolled by the Los Al PD, and has an excellent school district. It has a 'mall' (some upper scale chain stores) on Los Alamitos blvd and it's close to 2 major freeways making it very convenient to go anywhere. Depending on where you work in Long Beach, you can even get there by local streets

She should call the district. But I think the general rule is neighborhood kids get first choice at their neigbhorhood school. If there is room left, outside kids can go there. So if she moves and is then considered "outside" then her kid will be admitted only if space is available. Typically the belmont area schools are filled with neighborhood kids and there isn't space for outside kids. But again, she should just call the district.

Also, most districts have deadlines for intradistrict transfers. Generally sometime in the spring before the next school year.

Cypress, Ca. is a great place to live... There is no mall- just local service stores. But really close are Long Beach Town Center, Cerritos Mall, Buena Park Mall, and about 20 minutes by freeway is the world famous South Coast Plaza and a little further Fashion Island. It's central located with respect to Orange County and LA. Close to the beach w/o being on the beach. etc.

Uh, try more like 30-45 mins travelling time to South Coast Plaza with no to mild traffic. Cypress has no freeways running through it, and while it is central to people crisscrossing between the South Bay, Long Beach and central Orange County, it is somewhat "in a corner" if your main areas are the beach cities of Orange County. Seal Beach and Sunset Beach are the most easily reached; anything else will be bit more of a drive.

That there is no freeway running through Cypress yet they (91, 5, 405, 22, 605) are within easy reach is a plus. Studies have shown health hazards of living next to freeways. Also South Coast Plaza is 20 minutes away.
