Reported by NBC Nightly New on June 29, '10:

Obesity by states, General Population and in Children (50 states + DC):

Childhood obesity: 51st (Oregon has lowest percentage of children who are obese)
Adult Obesity: 39th (only about 25% of Oregon's population is Obese.)
Adult Black Population: 13th (38.4% of Oregon's black population is obese)
Latino Population: 46th (only 23.7% of Oregon's latino community is obese)

Compare with Washington State:
Childhood obesity: 48th
Adult obesity: 28th

Quote:
Note: 1 = Highest rate of adult obesity, 51 = lowest rate of adult obesity. Rankings are based on combining three years of data (2007-2009) from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to "stabilize" data for comparison purposes. This methodology, recommended by the CDC, compensates for any potential anomalies or usual changes due to the specific sample in any given year in any given state.

Some of those childhood obesity rates are staggering. I am surprised the Colorado was as high as it was. I typically think of Colorado folks outdoor and health food oriented like Oregonians tend to be.

Why does it seem Latinos have a tendency to be more obese thatn other races? Is it they don't care about their health? The healthcare cost goes higher I noticed with obesity related health problesm. I do notice they buy alot of junk food! Not good!

What is with you and Latinos? Actually my race is fatter (African American), its sad to. Latinos are more thinner for the most part. Poverty has alot to do with it. Notice how the south is very fat compared to the rest of the Nation. Hopefully with more education and Urban Farms most states will see a decline with obesity rates.

It isn't a Latino or black thing. It is a poverty thing. They buy junk food because it is cheap. People that are poor cannot afford fresh food. I mean think about it. Today a pint of raspberries cost $3.00 here in Oregon. You can get your kids those, or you can buy them a .99 cent deal at BK and give them a meal for .99. If you have $10 for food that day, it's a no brainer. Junk food wins because it is cheaper.

You do realize that Hispanics and blacks have a higher rate of poverty in the US right?

So, if you want to help your fellow Americans to not be so fat, write a letter to your congressman and ask them to stop subsidizing soy and corn which make up the bulk of ingredients for junk food and ask them to subsidize spinach and carrot farmers, et al...we are subsidizing the wrong foods for a healthy America.

So...that is the problem. Not Latios not caring about their health.

This exactly. +1

I also would add that poorer health education for impoverished people also adds to the dilemma. Sometimes they think the BK value meal equals fresh veggies and fresh cooked meat.

Gotwine appears to be pushing his (or her) flat out racism to the point of ridiculousness.
