My best friend and I are looking to relocate our families to Oregon sometime soon. We are however at a loss of what town is the best for our needs.

We come from AZ and are ready for a change of scenery. We do live in the mountains and enjoy the rains that we get, which is one reason why we want to move to the Oregon state. We want more rain.

Some of my requests are that I can move to a town that has a fairly long (just not short) growing season. I love farming and gardening and I need to continue that.

I also want some place that doesn't get very cold in the winter. I don't mind snow and even welcome it but I don't want constant snow, or temps below freezing as a high, all winter long.

I also don't want to live IN a big city. I enjoy a small town feel, but sometimes they are tough. So I was thinking of a town/city of 50,000 - 80,000 people.

Her requests are, a big city nearby. About an hour driving time is okay with her.

A good school system and a great city to raise kids in.

And our biggest request is somewhere with lots of beautiful natural scenery. We live in the mountains now and enjoy the trees and just wish we had more greenery to look at.

I hope I gave a pretty good description of what kind of town we are looking for and I hope that someone can help give us an idea of what town/city would work well for us in the beautiful state of Oregon!

Thanks!!

Off the top of my head I was thinking McMinnville or Corvallis areas.

Talking The Rogue Valley is nice !

The Rogue Valley ~ Grants Pass ~ but all of Oregon has four seasons and the growing season is probably from spring up to frost in October. Since I'm not a farmer I am only guessing

Silverton is 9,000 people. Super nice small town. Corvallis has 50,000 people or so and is about 1 1/2 hours from Portland. McMinneville is I think around 10-15,000 or so. That might work.

You can grow veggies in the valley from March-Nov as long as you use a cloche. Otherwise it is June-Oct for most things. Gardening West of the Cascades is a really good book on our local soils and growing seasons.

Here are two suggestions:

Forest Grove - It's far enough out that it doesn't blur with the Portland metro area. However it's easily within 45 minutes of downtown.

Tillamook - Mild and wet, mountains, great place for gardens. However Portland will be a little over an hour drive.

I assume you won't need jobs because that'll be tough in these towns.
