Why does the violent crime rate seem so high in Philomath?

In a small town with a low incidence of crime, a single event can drastically distort the statistical average. Even so, the most current crime index for Philomath is 166.5. The U.S. average is 319.2. Coos Bay is 277.5. Tacoma is 641.4. Don't see what you're complaining about, really.

I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering why the crime rate seemed so high in what sounded like a great little town.

Honestly it is probably bar fights and a few domestic violence calls. Domestic violence has been on the rise in Oregon due to the stress of the economy here.

True, didn't take those types of violent situations into account. That makes me feel a little better, thanks. So it still sounds like a great little town.

But the schools in Corvallis can't be beat, and I need to consider that.

Dallas is also a very nice, smaller town you might like. Not a lot of job opportunities at the moment, but, an easy commute to Salem, Corvallis and even to Portland.
