I drove through Pendleton over the weekend and noticed that there is a new high-rise hotel at the Wildhorse Casino & Resort that has been topped out. I counted atleast 10 stories. Will this become the new tallest in Eastern Oregon, right after the Baker Tower in Baker City? Anybody know?

I don't know how big the tower is in Baker City, but it looks like the new hotel will initially be 7 stories, but yes, 10 is the final number of floors.

Baker Tower is also 10 stories:

Because of the lobby and ballrooms and such, some of the floors are much taller than usual:

According to this link, the Wildhorse Hotel is 170 feet tall.

According to emporis.com, The Baker Tower is apprx. 144 feet tall.

I think we have a new winner.

From the link:

Tower Crane Fun Facts:
• The crane is about 12 stories high
• Tower stands about 170ft.
• It took 3 cranes to get the tower crane built and operational.

Is the hotel 170 ft. tall, or is it the crane tower?

Hmm, now that I look at that closer, you may be right...they are likely talking about the tower crane, not the building. The mystery deepens.

OK I am again driving through Pendleton this weekend, and I have chosen to stay at the new hotel at Wildhorse, as it is now open. Rates are a bit pricey, but what the heck, I always like to be among the first at a new hotel. This is a quality, large resort for the formerly quiet Northeastern Oregon resort. Kudos for their aggressive expansion.

I will report back next week on my experience. Anyone done the hotel yet?

Just returned from a night at the new Wildhorse Gaming Hotel in Pendleton. Very nice overall, with beautiful rooms that feature a Native American theme. (One small complaint, the ice machine was not yet operational my floor...growing pains for sure, if this was the worst thing I ran into, then hardly worth mentioning).

More impressive, the casino space has almost doubled and the gaming area now seems as spacious as many Vegas or Reno hotel/casinos. Employees were friendly and courteous. This casino/resort now ranks as one of the biggest and best in the Northwest, and certainly has all the attributes of a destination resort. (golf course, several restaurants, and even a movie theater).

I find this somewhat surprising, as major cities are not exactly nearby. Portland and Seattle are atleast a 3-4 hour drive, and even Boise is three hours. Tri-Cities, at about 250K, is an hour away, but the Tri-Cities will not make or break this resort.

They're obviously trying to cater to the crowd that want's an over night stay.

True.

The overnight stay is a draw.

Let's break it down. Spokane has Northern Quest, but this hotel is not viable to Spokane residents. Perhaps it can draw from Canada, and rural WA.

The Pendleton resort may draw from Portland and Boise, but that could be a stretch.

New hotels at these casinos can be a big risk. This is indeed the trend, and I admire their aggressive approach, but wonder if the market will support them
