Hi all,

Me and my fiancee are preparing to leave Texas and are looking at Washington State and Oregon as possible areas to move to. Before anyone asks, we have had several personal tragedies happen in the city we live in, and after 30 years of living here its time to head out for something new.

I have a Masters in Library Science as of May, a School Library Certification as of May, A teaching certification and several years of teaching experience. She has a math degree and will be certified for schools as well with an ESL certification. We have two pets that mean the world to us and they will be coming with us.

We are avid gamers, and anime fanatics and look forward to different entertainment and other opportunities then are currently available where we are. We are looking for job opportunities, places to live etc and any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

As you doubtless know there is a lot of pressure on schools everywhere so some school districts may be working on their layoff list. Focus on jobs first. I would look at school districts east of Seattle because Boeing has been hiring and MicroSoft headcount is stable. Workforce growth brings more children.

Stick with the concrete jungle of Portland - you'll find lots of anime fans and folks who plug into various machines for entertainment.

Much of the rest of Oregon is more bucolic.

With ESL your wife will have no trouble displacing a current employee in a good part of the state. Librarians in Oregon, in school and in the cities and counties, are always on the short list for layoffs, so not such a good field in Oregon right now. My mother-in-law was a Librarian at a college for 30 years and knows most of them.

Not much demand for Librarians in Oregon, but you'll find people with Librarian degrees in odd places. For instance Laika had(has) a couple who catalog and store the puppets along with all the digital assets created by the company. Many museums have Librarians on staff to help catalog artifacts. Nike employs librarians in for their company history archives.

Both the US Government and State Government may need librarian services to catalog and store documents too. The US level jobs can be found at USAJobs.com while the Oregon State level jobs will be found at the Oregon Employment Department's iMatch job search tool.

Good luck!

Nell-The information is greatly appreciated and I'll start taking a look at that.
Prep- Thank you for that, we figured Seattle and Portland were areas that were more to our interests and thus part of why we were looking there.
Steve-Thank you for telling me about that in Oregon.
Hamellr-Thank you for that webpage and the information.
