We will be coming from Bend.

1. Is the best entrance to the park from the north side?

2. Does it cost anything just to enter, we don't play on spending a night, just walking around for a few hours.

3. Would you mind providing a couple campground names? We want to just have a picnic and play some Frisbee.

4. Do we need chains on our tires? We currently do not have those.

Okay so I have to buy a 7 day pass? What about tire chains? What about campground sites that are just for day use any other fees?

All National Parks require you to pay an entrance fee, which is good for 7 days. There is no single day pass.

I'm not sure when you will be visiting the park, but chain laws are in effect in the snow zones, which is usually Nov 1-April 1. I would check the park page for info. Chances are though, if you need chains to get to the park, the road around the lake will be closed.

In terms of picnicking sites, there are plenty of options around the lake without having to go into the actual campground. In fact, most campgrounds don't allow you to just picnic or use the site for day use. The main Visitor's Center and lodge on the south end of the park is a great halfway point if you are coming in from the north and has plenty of picnic benches for lunch.

Great thanks! We actually headed down there this morning. Do you know if they accept debit cards for the fee or if we must bring cash. Also, I have heard there is some good soft serve in a small shop down there, is that cash only as well?

As far as picnic sites, we will be tossing around a Frisbee so we are hoping to be somewhere near the forest but in an open spot so hopefully the visitor center makes sense.

I don't know about the cards, but I imagine you can find that information on the website. It's probably easies if you just get out some cash for the trip, though.

I don't know about the soft serve. I can't eat dairy, so I haven't sought it out.

There are quite a few picnic areas, so I imagine you will find one that works for you. Enjoy your trip!

Take cash, just in case. I don't know about the soft-serve. We always stop at Union Creek for pie or ice-cream, but that's out of the way for you.
I just looked at Tripcheck cam. It's sunny at the north entrance road.
It doesn't take all that long to drive around the lake. You'll have plenty of time to explore and find a place to picnic. Check out the lodge, too.

Beside hwy 62 by Union Creek, you can get soft serve ice cream & delicious pie. You can also see the Rough part of the Rogue River there...

I'm going tomorrow so I hope you come back and post about it after you see it.

you can call the number on the website and listen to a recording of conditions, etc, but you can also speak to someone if you use extension x3100 (I think)

it's useful to talk to a human!

We always stop here!

Great views of the Rogue, and easy to get to.

I like to sit in that giant chair and eat a giant ice cream!!
