Family of 4, now 2.... Kids been gone a long time. They learned to get by on our $100/ month.

We also frequently cook and feed elderly shut-ins within our budget.

Very simple,.... Be a good shopper, don't buy prepared food, cook from scratch.
No coffee, beer, candy.

Oatmeal with raisins and cinnamin costs less the $0.20 / day
Salmon direct from Indian fishery (next door) is cheap and very ez to barter goods / services
Edible landscape (blueberries...500# / yr)
Gleaning at commercial farms
Full freezer
Eggs.... Very cheap for food value.

Plenty of produce 4-6 servings / day ( previous fruit farmer / always a 'producer' from birth... Dairy Farm Boarding School...)

Never eat out. $100 includes 'entertainment' which we do plenty ( currently on a One yr RTW). Seldom eat out, our hosts are great cooks! And we are good at grocery store / fresh market eating.

It's really pretty simple. Don't buy anything that comes in a box, and limit your meat intake to 4 oz. a day. It helps to have a freezer. They clean out the previous year's crop every spring, and you can buy premium frozen vegetables for 68 cents a pound. Potatoes are $1.69 for 5 lbs. A $5 whole chicken makes 4 meals plus a kettle of bone broth. Add an onion, 68 cents worth of vegetables and 3 or 4 chopped potatoes and you have 4 more meals. Top baked potatoes with sloppy joe sauce. Make navy beans and ham. Buy a bread machine and quit buying bread. People who spend a lot of money on food don't know how to cook.

....and for special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas family dinners, there's nothing better or more festive than a good possum pie.

But to get this thread back on track, Safeway and Albertsons appear to be keeping those brands alive in Oregon and Washington. My perception is Safeway has higher prices than Albertsons, but I have seen more sharing of products between the two stores. I also perceive that Safeway has better interiors than the average Albertsons, but this could vary depending on location. Both have good bakeries and hot food bars, but I would give the edge to Safeway.

Safeway still honors their club card, where Albertsons does not offer this anymore. I would expect some sort of consolidation on this marketing in the near future.

So you don't have to read the whole thread:

In March 2014 the parent company that owns Albertsons proposed to buy Safeway.

In January 2015 the Federal Trade Commission approved the sale with the provision that in order to maintain competition between stores that were close together, 168 would be sold to another grocery chain.

Baker City had two major supermarkets, a Safeway and an Albertsons, literally across the street from each other. The FTC decided that in order to maintain competition, the Albertsons had to be sold.

In February 2015 the FTC approved the sale of 146 stores, including the Albertsons here in Baker City, to Haggen, a small chain with 18 stores in Washington and Oregon. Most experts and most ordinary people, for that matter, wondered how such a small chain could manage such a purchase.

In September 2015 Haggen filed for bankruptcy.

In March 2016 the U.S. Bankruptcy Court approved the sale of 29 Haggen stores to back to Albertsons, including the one here in Baker City.

It appeared that in spite of the FTC's good intentions, we would have a Safeway and an Albertson owned by the same parent conpany, anyway.

So much for the FTC maintaining competition.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!

The corporation that owns Safeway and Albertsons announced that Baker City would not have a Safeway and an Albertsons, it would have two Safeways.

Two Safeways right across the street from each other – you can't make this stuff up.

Article here: Safeway strangeness;
Expect one to close within 6 months.

Albertsons has a very short life expectancy, unless it's the only game in town (not usually the case).

They have continued to consolidate to try to keep afloat, but their boat is history. Maybe 5 more yrs, in profitable areas, but grocery has too narrow of margins to distribute to a wide area that has low volumes.

Winco takes a lot of Albertsons shoppers. Oregon's proximity to ID has kept Albertsons around, but not for long. There will be a disruptive and successful online grocery solution within 5 yrs. Much of the world has used provisioners for decades, USA is very ripe for that service. We used 'provisioners' while living in Asia and Europe in the 1980s. Very efficient and improves your quality of life. Less hectic, more time with family, no shopping / driving / parking / stress, no family time wasted dinking around looking for a $0.39 item.
