I rarely buy fuel in Oregon but did so in Medford on Monday.

The station was conveniently located next to I5 so I decided to tank up.

I was not expecting it would take 19 minutes to buy 14 gallons of gas.

Only one attendant serving 5 to 8 vehicles... so lots of wait time.

Poor guy was running from pump to pump trying to keep everyone happy and I gave him a dollar tip which was much appreciated... my car has California plates.

So I get back on I5 and get about a mile down the road and the emmission light goes on... never had that happen before...

Turns out the gas cap was not on tight and the fuel door was not secure

Why is it again that someone holding a valid driver's license isn't deemed able to refuel their own car in Oregon?

Unfortunately, only bad experiences tanking in Oregon.

Alaska gas station experience: go to fuel up. Pump is not working correctly. No help from the lump sitting in front of a cash register inside -- in fact, less than no help, get sneered at. Make a mental note to never hire said lump or any of his relatives when they invariably come around looking for work next spring. Drive to other gas station eight miles away where they value their customers and pump the gas themselves. No difference in gas prices, and even if there were, I refuse to nickel and dime my quality of life to pieces. Win.

You are lucky to not be driving a Diesel, you might still be sitting on I-5.

Very common for Oregon attendants to fuel Canadian diesel cars with gas, many of our northbound Canadian guests, have had a huge delay / wrecker service due to improper fill in Oregon. , ...to say nothing of the potential LT damage to engine, Injection pump, and fuel components.

Sorry you've only had bad experiences. I've had one experience in the past 25 years that was bad--attendant did not pay attention to the order that the cars came in, so he went about serving people that pulled in after me. I drove across the street to a different gas station--problem solved.

It just seems strange that an able bodied person holding a driver's license is breaking the law should this person attempt to fill up.

My first experience was at age 16 driving to Canada... stopped for fuel after dark in Sutherlin Oregon and didn't see anyone so I started pumping gas and then this deranged madman came running towards me screaming obscenities and flailing his arms...

I fully admit I was ignorant of the law... although I had spent the summer in Oakland California pumping gas even before I had a driver's license.

The guy was cussing out my being from California and said he was calling the law on me... that irrational experience has stuck with me.

Another time, we were traveling in a group of cars and the car I was riding in was badly scratched by the attendant who didn't know how to put gas in a 1930 Model A Ford... similar from biker friends.

Anyway... the station I patronized Monday was clean, modern, well lit and right off the freeway... I never looked at price.

The poor attendant was doing the best he could but was simply overwhelmed... as mentioned, I gave him a tip which he much appreciated.

The fuel cap and fuel door not latched was not something I was expecting.

Normally, I fill up in Olympia and drive through to Weed California... and vice versa... this avoids having to stop in Oregon altogether.

Someone please explain to me the point of the law in Oregon that you can't pump your own gas?

Are there any other states with this stupid law?

Are they scared of fire or something? I don't get it.

I don't really like that Oregon has a law where you can't pump your own gas. Almost everywhere else you are allowed to do it by yourself.

If you are wondering about it, just do a forum search.

There have been about two thousand threads asking the same question.

I am sure glad I don't have to wait for a attendant especially when I am in a hurry which is most of the time when buying gas because of your stupid unnecessary law.
