Wannamove - I applaud your efforts to make a better life. There are many small towns in Oregon where rents are affordable and the cost of living isn't excessive. The whole state isn't liberal and elitist. We also don't know enough about you to pass judgement....there but for the grace of God go I...

I think you should think about Elgin it is close to La Grande and has better section 8 housing that has a river view.Just watch out for the cowboys on a Sat. night. Every thing is in walking distance .And the weather is great in october. AS I live there I know.regards local Rancher

Unhappy Disability in CA and desire to move to OR

I was really stunned at the ignorant query posted by a member here regarding the person who is on Section 8 and living, what sounds to be, below poverty level and being chastised for wanting to move to OR and live off the taxpayers here! There was a comment about how far this 'disabled' person could walk - to and from the grocery store - hills and all. The comment went on to ask how that could be, if one is considered disabled?? What person with a disability could begin to walk to a grocery store and back with packages, was the implication. Let me just say that there are all forms of disability. Not all of them involve having physical disabilities. My aunt has been diagnosed 100% disabled for 40 years. She was 33 yrs. old when she was diagnosed - and is now 73. She has a major seizure disorder; cannot drive a car; takes the bus everywhere or I drive her. I, on the other hand, am considered able-bodied (I am 63) and I have such horrible arthritis in my feet that I had to give my treadmill away because I cannot walk for more than 10 minutes without being in excruciating pain. Disabled? Not according to any body or any agency. But, I am physically less able than my aunt, who IS disabled! She lives very meagerly and is a parttime volunteer at a mission. She gives back, as she feels she has been given a way to live independently and with dignity! I was deeply saddened by the comments of the poster who negatively commented on the person who was vulnerable enough to state his/her circumstances/needs and looking for some positive feedback! Let us not judge, lest we be judged!
