Are you planning on driving to Portland this summer? Don't. Just don't. You will see the most miserable traffic conditions in a decade, and they may be underestimating the impact. There will be freeway closures, bridge closures, ramp closures and congestion beyond belief.

The work is starting July 8. ODOT started announcing this last March, but you know about the public attention span. Well, that freight train is heading for the freeways, and it' not slowing down. The work should be done by the end of August.

Well, maybe it will cure the glassy-eyed Californians from deciding to move there, after a 2 week vacay in the middle of summer LOL.

The problem is the weather window is short for getting major work like this done. And since they got the funding, they need to go for it when they can.

It's going to seriously s*ck. Sorry for you all.

But, honestly, I wish we had your problem. The pot holes in my area are becoming highways to China. Be grateful you have funds to get the work done. And get some good audio books for the summer commute, I guess.

Much worse than usual. Much, much worse. If MAX will get you there, take it. If you can avoid Portland completely, do it. Taking 205 from I-5 to 84 could take as long as three hours. If you are flying out, check into a hotel near the airport the day before, or risk missing your flight.

The overnight PDX is exactly what I do. It's a 3-4 hour drive from mid-coast, on a good day. Just too much can happen, if you try to fly out, the same day.

I usually just fly to PDX from Eugene.

But you're usually headed north from there, right? That would make sense. I presume that's Alaska Air, which again, would make sense.
EUG is a shorter drive for me, flying south, but Allegiant doesn't work well for me.

Yeah, I usually go north or come south from Ketchikan. They have little Horizon commuter jets that I take to or from Portland or Seattle. The last few years I've been taking my Subaru though and going on the ferry between Bellingham/Ketchikan.

I imagine you could also take the Horizon commuter jet to Portland to catch a flight south, though. Might be something to think about if you have to travel while this is going on.

ETA the Eugene airport is so much better than PDX. Lines are much shorter and check in never takes very long.

LOL, I thought you were going to show us a picture of that guy from Bend that 'took off' a few years ago in his lawn chair with balloons attached.

Those Ultra Lights though are a pretty quiet mode of transportation. A couple years ago on an early morning walk on Bullards Beach in Bandon, two were flying around and one actually LANDED behind me. With the sound of the surf and wind, I didn't even hear him coming. I guess he had some sort of problem. He didn't stay landed long. But boy, was I surprised. lol.
