Greetings and welcome to my thread! We are currently 99% sure we are purchasing a 2-acre lot just outside Coos Bay. It is bare and we would be building a home on it. I need hands-on info regarding so many questions! Who is a reputable well-driller? What is the price of hay, as we have horses. Hunting opportunities...where is the state and US Forest and BLM lands? Is there a recycler in the area, besides state, city or county...a buyer of recyclables? Who is a VW specialist that can be trusted? Large animal vets? Is there a Winco? LOL! I know I will have more questions as I learn more...any help would be appreciated!!!! My research continues..... =-)

Hi. I cant help you a whole lot here, but did want to give you a WELCOME HOME TO COOS BAY!!!! bout the only question I can answer, is nope, theres NOT a Winco nearby.....closest thing to that, would be the WalMart Super center.
Id say pull up Southcoastshopper.com and Theworldlink.com both are local papers and might have some of what youre searching for.
I know Hansons and Morgans are 2 of the local vets, but no idea if they are for horses or not...we just have standard housepets...
VW....uhhh....no clue. Maybe call over to Shucks Auto Supply...they might know. (?????)
sorry i cant be of more help!
but hey, WELCOME!!! and youre just intime for the Shore Acres Lights!! DONT MISS IT!

"Hunting opportunities"? And you also want to know about local animal vets? How can you want to kill animals and then help other animals with a vet?

Please don't come to Oregon to kill our wildlife.

Pen-Cap-Chew!
I posted this thread to get some advice and help relocating as a law-abiding, honest, useful member of society. Why the attack? Is it not my right to hunt and fish in compliance with state and federal laws? Do you judge me because I do what people (even...ACK!...YOUR ancestors!!) have done since the beginning of time? Does your car have leather seats? Are you a Vegan? Do you know the misery and suffering of domestic animals when corporately raised and slaughtered so you can eat your filet mignon, pork roll or turkey burger? Do you realize the numbers of rodents, insects and small birds that are crushed and killed when beans, wheat, oats and other crops are harvested?
I take excellent care of my horses and livestock and need the services of a vet if injuries or illness are beyond my knowledge to fix. Do you think I will shoot my horse and call a vet? Please don't insult my intelligence. Don't twist my post to make it seem that I am a hypocrite. If you wear leather shoes, eat meat in any form, use lard in cooking, own any type of animal products at all, you are the same as I, only you don't put it in the freezer yourself.
I took the state certification Hunter's Safety Course, know my firearm, hunt according to all Oregon and California state laws and beleive it or not, if we were to have this debate in person, the state laws protect me from harrassment from you. Look it up.
I'm sorry if you don't understand me...I do understand you and the fact that you need to spout your point of view to try to belittle me. Your attack on me is uncalled for and if hunting bothers you that much, please move to California where PETA is trying to outlaw fishing because it might hurt fishes' lips.
My boyfriend is an Oregon resident and has hunted there for the last 38 years. I think your advice is a little too late...

I have right to say I rather you not come to Oregon if your goal is to harm animals. I have not called you nasty names, I asked you a question: How can you feel the need to protect some animals and yet kill others? I find this behavior of affection/caring for some types of animals and then a detachment of other types of animals strange. Many people in Oregon feel the way I do and if you come here prepare to hear about it from a lot of people, especially if you reside near Portland or Eugene. And to answer your questions: yes I'm a vegan, I don't have leather car seats, I don't wear leather shoes, etc. I live in the woods and have many deer that come every year and sit in front of my house with their babies and it tears me up that there are people that want to kill them when they are just trying to live their lives.

Pen-Cap-Chew...in your own words...
"This is not [Politics and other Controversies]. This forum is about [LetterLady's Quest for Friends in Coos Bay, not Portland or Eugene]. Sorry about your problems, but I don't think this is the appropriate place for you[r] post. There are a lot of [Controversy/Political Views/Vegan] forums that would be ideal for this kind of post."
"I think this thread has gone way off topic LOL. I forgot this is supposed to be about [LetterLady's Quest for Friends in Coos Bay]."
BTW I have 1981 VW Rabbit Diesel LS that runs on veggie oil...my middle son designed the system and my bright yellow car is a prototype...seems we have a thing or two in common
Shall we start a new thread for the controversy of hunting vs no hunting? If not, I would be pleased to get back on course, trying to find nice people that actually live in Coos Bay.
To answer your peculiar and inflamatory question - "How can you feel the need to protect some animals and yet kill others?" - please take note:
Some animals hunt for human casualties - cadaver dogs
Some animals assist law enforcement - drug-sniffing dogs, attack dogs
Some animals assist the blind and handicaped - seeing-eye dogs, monkeys, even parrots
Some animals give milk (non-life-threatening to the animal...my Nubian goat loves to be milked) - dairy cows, goats, sheep...even camels and horses
Some animals provide transportation - horses, dogs, oxen, donkeys, mules, camels, alpacas, llamas, elephants, even goats can be taught to pack
Some animals provide fibers we weave into clothing, rugs, blankets, even shelters, which does not harm the animal - Angora goats, sheep, alpacas, llamas
Some animals provide pest control - cats, rat terrier dogs, snakes, hawks and other raptors, owls (who can devour over 1,000 mice in a single year!)
Some animals cull the sick and wounded from the wilderness gene pool - predators such as bears, big cats, coyotes, wolves
Some animals provide eye candy for us - tropical fish, songbirds, parrots, parakeets, reef aquarium fishes and invertebrates
Some animals provide human companionship, even in a therapy sense - dogs, cats, hamsters, rats, gerbils, bunnies, potbelly pigs, miniature horses and goats, etc.
Some animals are sporting professionals - polo ponies, racehorses, bucking bulls, greyhounds, trotting horses, vaulting horses, dressage horses (Olympic event), even frisbie-chasing and herding dogs
Some animals provide eggs - chickens, quail, ducks, emus, ostriches - did you know that the eggs you buy aren't fertilized and would never hatch even if given the opportunity?
Some animals provide hunting assistance to humans - dogs, falcons
Some animals provide food in the forms of meat and fat - cattle, sheep, goats, swine, rabbits, fowl, emus, ostriches, llamas, alpacas, and in some societies, horses, rats, cats and dogs
Some animals provide food that can be hunted to be aquired by humans - deer, elk, peccaries, havalinas, raccoons, caribou, moose, bear, rabbits, pheasants, armadillos, grouse, quail, geese, pronghorn antelope, Dall sheep, bighorn sheep, mountain goats
Some animals provide food that can be fished to be aquired by humans - tuna, flounder, crabs, shrimp, snails, mackeral, shellfish, shark, herring, eels, catfish, snapper, trout, salmon, to name a few
Some animals provide other valuable items such as leather, pearls, suede, rawhide, gelitan, lard, fertilizer, pet food, feathers, calcium by-products (oyster shell fragments that are fed to chickens to give them calcium for strong eggshells), even hair for art and shaving brushes - goats, swine, shellfish, fowl, cattle, sheep, badgers, goats, etc.
Everything and everyone has a purpose. Predators prey on prey animals (coyotes favor rabbits, for example, but will also eat my chickens, cats and kid goats). Do you judge the coyote? Do you know they swallow their small prey whole and alive? I have seen it.
Hereford cattle were bred for meat, Quarterhorses were bred to work cattle. It's OK to have your "I won't eat anything with a face" philosophy, but know this: most people don't share your point-of-view. Yet those same people will stay up all night tending to a colicky horse, a kidding doe goat, or will stop to try to save a destined-to-die dog that got hit by a hit-and-run driver, flagging down passersby for help. That same person will eat venison for dinner. I'm sorry the world is so cruel. No one takes joy in pain and suffering and responsible people do things as humanely and legally as possible.
The Bible says: "And God said, Let us make man in our image ... and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."
We share our meat with those less fortunate in our own community. In particular a man who lives in a garage, gets only SS checks, has no friends but us who actually care and is fighting cancer. Meateaters can have compassion, too.
I hope this novel gives you an insight to my point of view. I will respect your ideals if you will respect mine.
