The best way to see Ashland is to walk. Go through Lithia park, up and down teh "main drag" and window shop. Walk along Lithia creek behind the shops and under the bridge. Other than that, there isn't a whole lot to see. Once you get out of town, there's lots of neat places in the woods... the Pacific Crest Trail, Mt Ashland, Soda Mountain, the Dead Indian Plateau, several wilderness areas, the list goes on and on.

IMO, the main difference between Ashland and Bend is the weather and environment. Ashland is wetter, closer to the coast (which BTW is incredibly beautiful and ALL public), lower in elevation, has more of the traditional PNW forest around it, while Bend is high dessert...lots of juniper and sagebrush, dry, colder, etc... Both are nice places though. Have a fun trip!

Default Why move from sonoma

Hi Wanderes, we are considering the Sonoma, Santa Rosa area. we are from Southern CA and would like to go north. Santa Rosa seems really nice. Would you tell me why you are leaving that area? Thanks

I suspect that this might have something to do with it...

So, Wanderer, what did you think of Bend & Ashland?

I grew up in Bend and went to college in Ashland (back when Southern Oregon was a College instead of getting these jumped-up ideas about being a University ) so I know both towns the way they used to be, not really how they are now--though I do get to Bend nearly every year, just never for very long.
