And social services (a safety net) are a good thing. Cases in point... Norway, Sweden, Denmark. Some of the most livable places in the world and they have excellent social services and high taxes. Taxes aren't necessarily a bad thing.
European Countries have very high VAT taxes... they also have very low property taxes compared to the United States... at least that is what I leaned working in Germany and Austria.

No one seems to fear loosing their home due to property taxes and many homes are handed down from one generation to the next... some for hundreds of years...
