I have been following the weather up there, as its certainly nicer than smoggy 100 degrees where I am. Question is, why is Newport which is on the central coast, colder than both Seaside (way north) and Brookings? I know Brookings is in the Banana belt and tends to be warmer. But Seaside??? Those are my three choices for retirement in a year or so, so just asking.

Can you stand being two to three hours from shopping?

Because if you can't, rule Brooking out. It has one Fred Meyer store which is like a grocery, clothes and hardware store bunched together under one roof. Then there is one other grocery store, Rays. Almost all else is best described as "shops". Nice town, but I ruled-it-out of my mind to live in, because I enjoy shopping for stuff I need and want every week.

Seaside has quite a few good size store, a Costco down the highway a bit, and, Portland and suburbs with tons of stores are within an hour.

Newport is big enough to be self-sufficing for quite a bit.

I'm camping in Brookings day after Independence day. Just happened to snag a campsite that someone cancelled on at Harris Beach state Park.

Thanks for the info. I guess I am just curious as to why Seaside in the north keeps posting higher temps than Newport which is central. Anyone know? Guess?

50.9 53.4 54.7 57.4 61.2 64.4 67.1 68.1 68.4 63.2 55.9 51.9 59.7

That's Seaside's climate summary averages for temps - January first at left. Far right bolded is annual average.

Here is Newport next...

50.4 52.5 53.7 55.9 59.3 62.4 64.4 65.3 65.1 61.0 55.1 51.0 58.0

Next is Seaside's minimum averages per month (all January to left)...

37.1 37.9 38.4 41.0 45.0 49.3 51.9 52.4 49.2 45.0 40.6 37.9 43.8

Next, Newports Minimum...

38.4 39.1 39.5 41.2 44.9 48.7 50.4 50.7 49.0 45.5 42.1 39.4 44.1

Don't rule out the minimums too. Newports annual minimum temp is slightly higher than Seaside's. When you average out the entire day's highs and lows, they may as well be the same.

Newport gets about 10" less rain per year.

I use this climate summary. Click "State Map" at top and pick your dot...

SEASIDE, OREGON - Climate Summary

I have no idea why Seaside is slightly cooler for higher temp averages - yet, its only like a two degree difference.

Realize, there are at least two main things that affect weather in NW Oregon. One, is the ocean. The second, is that the Columbia River Gorge can funnel winds. That may be part of it. One other thing, is how long the morning mist and low clouds hang around in the morning.

Hey thanks. That was great. Good info all around. Guess the day to day weather can be a bit misleading sometimes.

Its interesting down there at the coast. Brookings yesterday, reminded me of the north by Cannon Beach.

I left Applegate Valley near Medford, Oregon, about 8:30am yesterday, and within an hour, it was already near 85 degrees near Cave Junction. I saw 88 degrees shortly thereafter. Near 10:30, within 15 minutes of the Redwoods and coast, the thermometer overhead dropped from 86 to 59 degrees in 15 minutes.

There was a low cloud like a ceiliing, which cleared from Brookings about 1pm - the temps reached like 69 degrees. Oh, how wonderful it was. I thrive on cool weather.

Yeah, I love cool, brisk weather too. An example of my question is today's 10 day forcast for both Newport and Seaside. Newport is stretching into 72 degrees as a high, yet Seaside is predicted to be 85 on the same day! Is that normal? Or is this weird heat spell we're having across the western states (even Canada I see) affecting the Oregon coast too?

Hi,
We are searching for a coastal town not for retirees. We may eventually be looking to aise a small family. For now it is my husband and I. He is a plumber commercial and would need some building going on etc..I love to shop and se the sea. What might be a good consideration?

Default How about Florence?

Florence is within an hour (easy drive) from Eugene.

So you're saying that Newport Oregon has plenty of shopping? For those of you who have been to both Newport and Seaside in Oregon, which would you rate as a better place to live and start a family?Any info on school comparisons would also be appreciated.
