My wife & I moved to Brookings in 2007. As with any small town, you will be limited in shopping opportunities. Fred Meyer is the major player here, Walmart 40 minutes south of us, over the mountain range a close 3rd. Think about that, 1 road in and 1 road out. 2 hours to Cave Junction, 3 hours to Medford, 3-1/2 hours to Roseburg - all in good driving weather and no obstacles. DON'T even think of moving here if you have any medical issues requiring intensive specialites. You will be disappointed in the options. Travel can be tiring should you try to manage your healthcare while living on the coast. As retired military, VA services are extremely limited because most of it exists on the I-5 corridor.

I could go on, but here is just a touch of reality...

Agree with this post. We moved to Brookings, OR 10 years ago. Medical care is questionable. Many residents that develop serious conditions/illness often find themselves forced to move to be closer to "real" medical care. On the other hand, I doubt you could find a more beautiful enjoyable place to fish, hike, garden, find good friends or live with amazing wilderness close to your door.
