This response is kinda long, so plz bear with me. Spelling/grammar is most likely less than perfect...

I read your post with great interest and will respond in burgundy below to portions of the post. Thanks!

Eugene/Springfield is slightly older and much more populous, making it very undesirable to cookers. There's also a huge university there too, and most cookers know that Drug Enforcement tends to be a higher priority in communities with large colleges.

Good poiint!

South of there, you have Roseburg, which could be the worst Meth spot in the entire south state.

Roseburg didn't seem safe at night for lodging when I went through it in 2007, and again, a few weeks ago in 2010...!

Douglas County is general is a terrible, unfriendly place to live.

Ref: That's where Roseburg, Oregon is.

I can post Underground Economy here if you'd like. Or I can send you the link.

Sure if you have it available and it's not much trouble to find. Thanks. I should use this as part of a blog post about my experiences with meth, and the guy whose life I saved (actually the police - DO NOT EVER approach a meth addict - they are DANGEROUS AND ARMED) saved, because he was dying of hypothermia while trying to steal my car on meth.

I've stayed in both Arizona and New Mexico; Bullhead City and ABQ, respectively. I hated AZ with a passion, but NM was beautiful. Still, both cities have major MAJOR meth/crack problems that positively eclipse anything you'd find up in the Rogue Valley.

That's good to hear. How about Flagstaff? I lived there and the whole town was on meth and pot. Albuquerque was not safe at night and the place I lived had all the evidence of a former meth cook spot (pink and yellow stains on walls, acetone odors, solvents, cat urine smell, etc.). It tested positive for meth residue with Colorado's Inspection Perfection (Carl Brahe, environmental inspector) meth test kit.

I don't know if you've ever seen the show Breaking Bad, but it chronicles the story of a high school chem teacher who starts cooking Meth with his former student to subsidize his cancer treatment and leave his family money should he die. The show takes place right in the heart of ABQ, and does an excellent job of highlighting the area's drug problems.

I'll check it out. Thanks.

The show fell off a bit at season two, but season one was incredible and would receive my highest recommendation.

Ashland is a lot nicer than Medford and Eugene, but it simply isn't a pratical place to live if you're not well to do, a retired hippy, employed by the local tourism or the city itself...or any combination of the three.

Kids would literally be sitting there smoking pot, right on the hill, and the cops on bikes would ride up and bull**** with em' like nothing was going on. Suffice it to say, theres drug usage in Ashland. Whether or not I'd deem it a problem is a whole different story entirely, and none of this even matters if you don't consider mary jane a drug.

No I don't, it's a natural product. I'm libertarian and think it should be legalized and taxed. However, some can tolerate it, others cannot - because everyone's neurotransmitters are different. I can't tolerate it. I don't tolerate cold medicines either w/o going crazy.

Would the Libertarian state of Jefferson legalize it? Your description of Ashland sounds like Flagstaff, except in conservative Arizona, possession of ANY amount of marijuana for any purpose is a felony, and there are mutliple drug busts all over Flagstaff w/ young people going to jail.

I think it's a drug, but i'd be lying if I said I never tried it. I've never, ever tried meth or crack. Hopefully that makes sense.

I'd also be lying if I said I never tried it. I didn't like it. I've never tried meth or crack.

See replies to your questions in burgundy...

The area had a strong feel of family values and politeness. That's how it felt moving there. Personally, I like the west Portland suburbs or Medford area.

That's good to hear. Thanks ...

Actually, it's not the State of Jefferson, since there is none on a map.

Were you taught in school that a "State of Jefferson" exists?

No! :-) However I advocate a state of Jefferson.

You would have to define "putative evils of clearcutting" according to your opinion, before that aspect could be addressed. But I don't recall our children mentioning homework about forest management or global warming while we were down there.

Well good because these are controversial political / economic issues that do not relate to learning the basic non-partisan principles of economics, sociology, anthropology, and history.

Because clearcutting can cause complex consequences. In that park, clearcutting raised sediment in the river.

I agree that is a problem, however, no form of logging is perfect. My point is the Obama style envrionmentalists (...versus Free Market Environmentalists who represent the majority of Outdoorspersons...myself included...) are overly concerned about clearcutting, mining, fishing, urban sprawal, agriculture, and other natural resource and construction industries that keep Oregon alive!

However, because of better coordination between federal, state, and local environmental agencies, there are interagency meetings on just about everything these days, so if mining or timber reduce fish spawning, that will get addressed at the next meeting.
This is getting off topic so we'll discuss it elsewhere however thanks for answering my quesitons, and there are answers to your questions.

Default Thanks, to all for all info.

Thanks to everyone, in general you gave me some good info.

I had been watching in the background for a while and then lost internet access for a bit. I now have internet back (obviously) and have went back to watching.

The general discussion seems to have evolved to drugs, as it has in much of the country, very unfortunate.

To give everyone a little more info, the job I am considering is in Yreka, and I would want to live just in Oregon off of I5, ideally.

It would be a federal job so the process is long and I haven't made it pass the first interview stage yet.

Here are a few exact questions:

What are the area high schools like, especially in math & science?

What is average rent on a 3 bedroom?

How expensive is liability auto insurance?

Do they tax groceries?

Thanks again to all who have replied.

If you want to be around other folks who are educated, intelligent, and have lived all over the country, if not the world, then Mt. Shasta and Ashland will be have folks with similar backgrounds. If you choose Mt. Shasta, you will have to drive to Redding or Ashland for more entertainment choices. Lovely areas!

Having grown up in New Mexico myself, and been through Medford and Ashland more than once on vacations, I doubt either one, and certainly Ashland, has meth problems like Duke City. Partial confirmation? Look at the annual crime stats for each city right here on City-Data.

Are you talking public schools? Perhaps Ashland folks can talk about how Ashland does in that area. Medford, fairly abysmal.
