I am moving to Orlando from NYC and have been looking at homes in the Orlando area in several communities. I have been most impressed so for with the Avalon Park community. All I've seen so far is what I can look up on the Google Street view function. I like that they have a town center with in 5 minutes of anywhere on the community. Are other commutes similar to this one?

If you like that part of town a better choice would be Waterford Lakes, much better commute and closer to more diverse shopping and dining. In my opinion Avalon is too far out and those smoke stacks are not appealing.

The most similar to the town center concept would include Celebration ( what Avalon was modeled after), Baldwin Park - priced high, like Celebration, and Winter Park's Park Avenue, but the homes near there are either very old or very expensive. Avalon Park has the most affordable homes of the 4.

Waterford is but one of the communities near Avalon, Eastwood and Stoneybrook being the others. They are all nice areas but don't have the town Center. Waterford Lakes offers a nice shopping center just to the North of the developments. They have been adding many shops the larger stores are Home Depot, Kohls, Target, Bed Bath & B, Ross, Ashley furniture, Best Buy, Circuit city, Lowes, and TJ Maxx to name a few.

Waterford is more cookie cutter and Avalon is more new urbanist. If I had to choose I would pick Avalon they have a small downtown area as waterford does not and either way you will have to drive to the waterford lake town center.

Waterford is older and does have alot of nice big oak trees. And I agree the bad thing about Avalon is the fact you can see the power plant and it is ugly! Waterford you don`t see that ugly thing.

I think those smoke stacks will be a health concern for residents of Avalon in the future. I would not live there.

Maybe? Do you know what kind of fumes are coming out of them? I thought it was just steam?

I don't know exactly what they are, but any industrial smoke like that has to be harmful in some way. I do not recommend anyone move close to those smoke stacks. The negetive affects would not be known for years and by then it will be too late.
