All of West Orlando is in close proximity of what you call "ghetto".

For instance, I live live right by the Publix on Silverstar and Clarke, which is a nice area. It only takes a 5 minute drive towards Hiawassee until I see the "ghetto".

I'm sure the OP doesn't want to rent an apartment that is isolated.

Take a poll on the ORL forum and see how many people would advise living in Metrowest. It's not a good area to live in. Are you new to Orlando and/or FL?

If you have a job or can attend college and then get a job Orlando is not so bad. I think of it as a "big small town". Your jobs skills have to match the local economy or if you are clever like the guy that started "groupon.com"...and start a successful e business that would be a good option.

Metrowest was bad back when I lived there in 2000. My friend had the same experience. I moved asap after someone was robbed at gunpoint at the apartment mailbox. Why risk it?

There are plenty of apartments in Orlando, and I think would definately want to rent first. It all depends on your tolerance for traffic and commuting expenses (gas isn't cheap here either and you have a lot of toll roads).

Try some of the more established, family oriented areas to really get a feel for local communities: Oviedo, Lake Mary are nice areas in Seminole County.

I don't recommend Florida in general or Orlando in particular.

People are rude, lots of foreigners, schools are very bad, traffic is slow, not many jobs except in tourism and the govt, and no one wants to raise taxes to pay for maintenance much less improvements of the roads, schools, lakes, etc.

April and November are the best months weather wise. May to October is hot, and humidity can be 100% without rain. You can just stand still and sweat rolls down your back. It rains most days spring through fall, which supports the tropical landscaping. Hurricanes are not too threatening in Orlando, but one good one can wipe you out.

If quality schools are important, go to another state. If you like to hear English, go to another state. If good-paying jobs (over $50K a year) are important, go to another state.

I guess the best thing is the nice weather from November to April, but that won't pay your bills or teach your kids. If you value a good quality of life, go to another state.

I've heard this line before <yawn>

Let me guess --- you'd rather have high taxes and go to good schools in places like NY or CA? Oh wait....

News Flash? California Expenditures Per Pupil Among the Lowest in the Nation | MarinKids

http://www.wgrz.com/news/local/story...78305&catid=37

Quote:
If New York spent the same on elementary and secondary education as the two states that ranked higher in Education Week's recent annual "Quality Counts" report - Maryland ($4,207 less per student) and Massachusetts ($3,219 less per pupil) - it could have saved $11.5 million or $10 million, respectively, said EJ McMahon, director of the fiscally conservative Empire Center for New York State Policy.

"It's ironic that these numbers are coming out during a budget vote that's fixated on spending more on schools in a fiscal crisis," he said, referring to the nearly three-month late state budget.
McMahon said school employees' salaries and benefits comprise most of the $6,915 difference in per-pupil spending between New York and the national average. State spending on instructional salaries and benefits alone -- $11,818 per student, or 90 percent higher than the average - was more than the total per-pupil spending in 39 states, he said.

I agree to an extent, but I think you can at least limit yourself to a lot of the a-holes/rude ppl (and a lot of the foreigners - I'm not saying they are good or bad, I'm just saying) but if you move to Oviedo (better schools, very safe, friendly ppl) I think you can somewhat limit yourself to the things mentioned.
