My wife and I are going to Orlando this week for an anniversary trip to Disney World (always been her dream to go). In 1990 I attended Navy boot camp and Navy Nuclear school in Orlando. I know the base was closed. Are there any buildings from the base still standing? What's been done to the base since it closed?

It is now Baldwin Park, an upscale neighborhood.

I wasn't here pre-Baldwin Park, but the veterans hospital is there. Could that have been the base's main hospital when it was open?

You would not recognize the place. The parade grounds you drilled on are covered by houses and roads. The place where they had the fire fighting training on the plywood ship is now park of a huge park. The ship is long gone.

Maybe a couple of the old buildings survive.

After it closed, it sat vacant for a few years until "Baldwin Park" got started and now its a big sub division. A city within a city. Looks nice.
Go by. Take a look.

Thanks. I was hoping some of my nuke school dorm rooms and a few other buildings were still there. Those ponds and lakes were nice to look at and I knew they'd be good development material. Some of our Nuke school guys hated those lakes. Those who really screwed up had to stand a few hours of submarine watch on those lakes. When I say stand, I mean stand,...either at attention or parade rest.

Never seen a submarine in Lake Baldwin but an alligator once. Must have have to stand there a while LOL.

2 of our friends were stationed here during the Vietnam years (Air Force) and now live here as well and love it.

Be sure and check out the trail around the lake and the restaurants.

I am thinking of buying a house in Baldwin Park but i am concerned about possible health implications since the site used to be a nuclear power school. Did nuclear testing take place there?

Well, I had to take a lot of really hard tests there, but I don't think that's the type of nuclear testing you are referring to There wasn't a reactor there if that's what you're asking. In any case, nowadays they are required to clean up the area before they convert an ex-military base to housing. It is often one of the most expensive parts of converting a base to civilian use.

I went to boot camp and nuke school from August 1989 - April 1990 at NTC Orlando. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and given a discharge after that, but up until that time I had a really positive experiance.

It's a big housing development now, if you enjoyed your experience at NTC I wouldn't recommend going there; I made that mistake and it broke my heart.

The hospital is still around, which is not a place with very happy memories for me.
