My husband and I are fifty-something academics who may be relocating to central Florida, quite likely Winter Park. We would like to rent for at least the first year or two. Are the neighborhoods around Lake Killarney safe and reasonably quiet? We've seen some duplexes online that look okay. One was on Country Club Drive.

That area is safe (Winter Park is one of a few prestige areas in the city), but not sure of your description of "reasonably quiet". There isn't a lot of street traffic but you would be close to the major arteries of both 17/92 and Lee Road which is convenient, yet potentially more congested than you might like.

Excellent idea on renting...a good way of finding out if the shopping and entertainment are close enough without having to drive. The traffic down here can be challenging...

The traffic was a large part of why I left Florida thirty years ago, but the last couple of Ohio winters have us thinking of returning.

As like anywhere there are really nice parts of Winter park and really awful parts. You should have a good look around before deciding on any one area.

The OP asked about Lake Killarney, which is nowhere near awful...
