We will be moving down the beginning of August. Our kids will be 14, 9, 7 and 3. We moved once before but it was within the same school district so they kept the same friends and stayed at the same school. Needless to say this move is quite different!

My main concern is my 14 year old. He will be entering 9th grade. Our plan is to get down there so he can start High School right along with everyone else so he is not the odd man out.

Any tips you have found that has made the transition easier on your kids?

Thanks!

Get him involved in extracurricular activities early..sports, music, drama, arts, whatever it may be. There are tons of opportunities in the area and best chance to meet new people before the school year begins.

Our family has been through a situation almost identical to the one you described. When we moved several years ago, our oldest daughter was entering her freshman year. That fall was difficult but gradually, through extracurriculars, etc., she began to "fit in."

I don't think there is a magical pill for making the move easier; however, I have noticed that, if a family has a strong foundation to begin with (ours is with Jesus) there probably will be less separation anxiety. We have had to move several times (out of necessity) but I do think it teaches children to not become overly attached to things, or to their surroundings.

Best of luck with your move!

I agree with the premise that a strong foundation is important, but I choose focusing on family interdependence and reinforcement that the kids are loved no matter where they live. Another thing I choose to highlight because of MY experience is that while friends at this age are fun, they are RARELY bfF's. The people who are most important in a child's life are their parent's, their teachers, their community leaders and THEN a VERY DISTANT LAST is their peers/friends.

My 2¢ .
