Publix is packed down here and looks to be doing great business, but I wonder if there are enough people that are into specialty stores to support them.[/QUOTE]

Which is why I'm a bit afraid of the overall Orlando demographic which seems perfectly happy with "average". It's kind of telling when the area/state can only support one supermarket chain (Publix) for the most part.

So what about Winn-Dixie, Aldi, Wal-Mart (grocery), Target (grocery), Albertson's, Sam's, Costco, and some local ethnic/farmer's markets? Maybe Publix is fine for the average stuff, Whole Foods, Fresh Market, and LOCAL meat/ produce markets for the fancy. I do get your point, but it's not as black and white as you're making it.

It's pretty close to black and white which is perhaps why Trader Joe's and other quality regional/national grocers (Harris Teeter for instance) haven't entered the state. I should have prefaced my statement with the word "quality". In addition Aldi, Walmart, Target, Sam's and Costco are national retailers, so they're hardly a novelty. Winn Dixie and Albertson's are nearly belly up which leaves Publix in terms of quality regional grocers remaining. Florida is the one of the most populated states yet doesn't seem to reflect that in terms of grocers or other retail offerings. Just an observation after having lived elsewhere.

There are plenty of places to get fresh food. They just aren't in the center of Orlando. The only places in the center of the city are hipster places being sold as novelty, not quality. Florida is an agricultural hub. If you can't find fresh things, you just don't know where to look.

As for next big district, I'd say college park is more likely to get big. The golf course helps it's case for its longevity. Affluent white people always like being next to a gold course. Although for now I'd go with Thornton Park.
