Why are so many homes for sale in The Villages, Florida? We are looking to relocate and cannot understand why if they are still building new homes, why are so many up for sale? Is it due to the tornado in February or have all the residents passed away?

There could be a number of reasons for this iszykat....
Some people make the mistake of visiting Florida, thinking it's just the best thing since slice bread, decide to move there and find out it really is a living breathing place.
Some didn't do their homework and found out:
It was too expensive,
It actually got hot in the summer,
It was too crowded,
They missed their friends and families too much,
It just wasn't for them.
They just missed home.
Who knows but I don't think it was the tornadoes.

I agree. Also, if they are still building new homes then people are more likely to buy new than used therefore the old ones have been on the market for awhile and now there is too much competition. I don't think it is a reflection of the Villages more so of the Florida Real Estate market as a whole. Regarding the Tornado's, I do not think that deters buyers because it is such a random event. Also, look what happened after the hurricanes in 2004 - there was a huge influx of people moving to Florida and not out.

If I were you I rent before I buy you just never know .You may not LIKE IT. We look up there we live in fl so we drive up on a weekend and shop and go for dinner then hang around a watch them dance but I would now want to live there. well good luck

"So many homes" for sale is relative. I think there are currently over 1,000 resales (combined MLS and The Villages private real estate) and pushing 500 new homes. Total is 1,500. There are about 40,000 homes out there (60,000 residents), so that's about 4% available (1500 / 40000), which doesn't seem unusually high for a 55+ community.

The area does have some shopping and there getting more but I like book stores and a little more upscale shopping they don't even have a pottery barn

To answer your question....I live there.
The Real estate market is soft....all over.
The people up north cannot sell their homes, therefore, they cannot buy down south.
All new homes in wake of tornado have sold very quickly.
The preowned homes are almost being given away....again because the market is bad and there is so much competition.
Almost all the preowned homes for sale are because the owners are moving into the bigger homes. I am one such person.
It's a buyer's market right now.

Homes for sale in The Villages
Regardless of the "soft market" everywhere, I've been looking at Beverly Ball's website (realtor) and that of The Villages since 2003 and there has been an extraordinary amount of resales available. My question is WHY do so many people buy into that beautiful community with all it has to offer and then you no sooner blink and there are more and more homes up for sale. WHY do people want to move out of there? I was once visiting with my husband and while coming out of the sales offices, there was a gentleman with a picket sign showing "21 reasons why NOT to move to The Villages", and his reasons all had to do with problems with the construction of his vinyl sided home and promises they made to him about repairs that they never kept. After speaking with this gentleman, he told us that The Villages offered to buy back the house from him but that they wouldn't allow him to rebuy another home there. So what goes on? We're afraid to even consider buying there now because we don't think anybody is telling the truth about existing problems, higher taxes and amenities fees. Thank you.

Pottery Barn is not what I would consider upscale. It's a chain store with goods made in China. No different than Rooms to Go.

We looked up there we live in fl so we drive up on a weekend and shop and go for dinner then hang around a watch them dance 
but I would not want to live there.
