What's most important to you? Proximity to beaches, shopping, restaurants, theme parks for the kids??

We love the beach, we love camping, nice new upcoming areas -- Whole Foods, Farmers Markets, walkable neighborhoods with sidewalks. Cost is in the upper middle class area. Theme parks area cool too.

Older son 17 is a cross country runner, 9 year old loves playing baseball and running.

We would like to live in the area that people are in agreement that "IT" is a great place to live.

Thanks so much!!

Lots of choices although not all of them are going to have all of those things you've listed. I like the Winter Park and Dr Phillips areas of Orlando where you can be at a beach within one hour. Winter Park has great schools, nice housing, a farmer's market and great shopping/restaurants along Park Ave. Dr Phillips is in SW Orlando close to the world-class attractions of Orlando like Universal, Disney, I-drive etc with great restaurants and a good school district. Both areas also have a Whole Foods Market. Orlando probably has the best shopping outside of Miami compared to Vero or Tampa.

Tampa has nice areas as well, plus you have the theme park of Busch Gardens and proximity to clearwater for when you want to go to the beach.

Vero Beach is much more sleepy compared to Tampa or Orlando.

So, in the end, it's all about what's most important to you.

I'd choose Tampa only if being closer to the beach is a must. Otherwise, I'd choose Orlando. Winter Park and Dr. Phillips would be my top picks as far as location. Both areas have the shopping etc. that you want and both are known for excellent schools. Also, Boone High is a good school with a good track and CC program (and Marvin Bracy went to Boone).

If you'd like to live closer to downtown, you can check out Lake Eola Heights. The homes are gorgeous, the schools are good, and you are very near Thornton Park and downtown (of course, that is a negative if you want to be away from the action).

I agree that Vero is in a different league. Having said that, if you are open to smaller cities... you could check out Sarasota. IMO, it is much more appealing than Tampa or St. Pete.

BTW... I work from home and have kids, and I love Orlando.

Palm Harbor or Oldsmar would be your best bet, with an edge to Palm Harbor. The schools are great and it's a safe, solid upper-middle class area. While parts of Orlando are nice they typically aren't very large and in close proximity to some pretty bad areas, which is not the case in Northern Pinellas County. FYI, for more balanced responses versus "pro-Orlando" it would better suit you to post in the general Florida forum, unless you were trying to sway the decision...
