Channel 9 did this piece the other night about illegal street racing, mentioning OBT in particular. I used to go to the street races with friends in high school, though I never actually participated and have not attended one since 2009

9 Investigates illegal street racing in Orange County | www.wftv.com

My family's house is of equal distance to both John Young Pkwy and OBT and I can hear the street racing real late some nights, usually Friday and Saturday nights. OBT has the cars, John Young has the speed bike racers

Now one thing I DO like about Far South Orlando is that OBT and John Young have higher speed limits than other areas they pass through, and since development is more spread out the lights are further apart, more than a mile in some places, but I also think perfectly straight roads with high speed limits and far apart traffic lights attract street racers, one reason I REFUSE to use OBT after midnight, John Young is not as bad but it's still an issue

The video states (and I'm not surprised) that 70% of the street racers come from Osceola County, the last time I went to a race, there were an awful lot of cars that read "OSCEOLA" as the county on their license plate, mostly Hondas and Toyotas

Is street racing an exclusive problem to the far south side of the city, do any other areas experience it?

While I love cars as well as racing, I don't condone illegal street racing. The general stretch that sees the most racing is OBT between Taft-Vineland Rd and Osceola Pkwy

It's a problem everywhere but to a greater extent to the South because of more open roads with less cops.

We have problems with it in parts of Lake county, and I know Polk struggles with it as well.

Since Lake Co is less developed than Orange Co, I could see street racing being a problem late at night. Highway 27 north of Highway 192 seems like an almost ideal place to do that

Polk struggles with it too? I had no idea? But then again some communities around Poinciana have pretty open roads that racers probably like but I'm not sure. Polk Co is on my list of places in FL to avoid unless Publix ever requires a trip to their corporate offices which hasn't happened yet

Cops here on the far south side seem to like spending their time on Orange Ave particularly between Taft-Vineland and Town Center Blvd. that stretch of Orange is pretty open with few lights (and a GREAT alternative to south OBT traffic) The speed limit along this stretch is only 45 but traffic (non racers) usually goes about 60 along this stretch, I wonder if people race there too

I know people race on OBT between Taft-Vineland and Osceola Pkwy because I can hear it at night, and there's usually no shortage of cars parked in empty lots, and Hispanic food trucks (great food though) lined up and down OBT, particularly at OBT and CFL Pkwy

Nope, that's not the problem area. There are various county roads that are far more rural and appealing than a highly traveled State highway patrolled by Troopers.

Just take a look at the demographics of South Orange and North Osceola. There's your answer why street racing is a problem there.

Are you saying that white folk don't race cars? Your comment shows intense racial bias.
