Hello:

J just moved to Hunters Creek area. Very nice. I have an education background and would like to start or join a community group of persons desiring to start a middle/high school for High-functioning Autistic children.

My high functioning autistic son will be attending high school in one year. While I think Orlando
schools are good and better than any other county in Florida re autism schools, recent surveys show a real
need for specialty schools on the middle/high school level for mild to high functioning students in HC area (recent board decision suspended transportation at two charter schools for autistic students).
While I do believe in mainstreaming, but most teachers are not able to provide the QUALITY individual attention needed (I speak from experience with 25 years in education).

If anyone (parent, community groups, churches, etc )would like to be a part of a network with like-minded people, please respond via email. I do have experience with opening charter schools as a parent (which is one reason why my son did well in elementary---I enrolled him there once it was open in South Florida.)

Deadlines: letter of intent (July 1st) and charter application (August 1st).

Any INTERESTED and DEDICATED individuals desiring to make a difference!
Let's get started! Thanks for reading!

Hi, we just moved here from Pittsburgh Pa and I do have a High Schooler: HFA, and a Middle School moving to HS next year that is an Aspie. OCPS is most certainly not prepared for them. Have you started anything? I live in Cypress Lakes. I have a strong educational background and worked as an Inclusion Consultant with the Pa Dept of Education.

Bumping this thread in hopes of someone updating us. Does anyone know any specifics regarding charter schools and students with autism? I have a high functioning 14 year old. We plan to move to Colorado before she graduates. She is doing so well in school with minimal supports that I feel she could be very valuable to other students needing a mentor. If anyone knows where to direct me, I'm paying attention. Thanks!
