I'd like to go to the beach this weekend and look for some seashells with my kids, since it's too cold to swim. But where we normally go - New Smyrna Beach - only has broken shells and that beach is pretty crowded. Is there someplace where we can walk the surf and find some good shells? A place not too far of a drive from Winter Springs.

Gulf coast beaches tend to have better shells than Atlantic coast beaches. Probably the best place for shells that I've been to is Sanibel Island, but that will be a bit of a far drive for a day trip.

I'd also vote for Sanibel Island

Any of the west coast beaches would be better than the east coast beaches.

I don't want to do an east-coast drive. Surely the east coast somewhere has a good spot?

East coast beaches aren't ideal for shelling. About the best you might find on the east coast is up near Amelia Island. It's still a decent drive to do in a day trip.

East Coast beaches are more known for fine sandy beaches...

What about Canaveral National Seashore? Being far less crowded, there would be fewer people to find the good shells, right? I'm trying to decide between shelling on the east coast somewhere, or going to visit friends elsewhere.

Again, great beach with lots of sand…and not so much in the way of shells. It's a great place to visit, but if the sole reason is to collect good shells, it will be a disappointment. East coast beaches in Florida just aren't of the same caliber as gulf coast beaches.
