Good question - They're popping up EVERYWHERE in South Florida. Not sure how true this is, but a buddy of mine in the insurance business said they were money laundering apparatuses...he may be on to something...

There is some truth to that. Kind of like laundromats.

It's true that they're popping up everywhere but the number of them relative to the population hasn't changed that much. What you're seeing is just new tech that is drawing investment. Just off the top of my head and never really paying attention to them I can think of 3 new car washes, one replacing a restaurant, one replacing an old car wash, and one that's replacing an old oil change place with a car wash. But then I can think of three that are recently torn down - the two I mentioned plus the one on Curry Ford across from Foxtail Social. Not bad odds when you consider how many new cars are here.

It could be but then, when you think about it, an automated car wash would get destroyed if they ever got audited. The old car washes are like laundromats. You have to pay cash to get coins that you feed to the meter on the hose or vacuum. You can pay cash at the new car washes but everything is constantly recorded and metered. Any kind of basic forensic accounting is going to uncover that kind of fraud. Besides, most of these places are corporate owned, are subscription based, and are being funded by private equity.

Side note anyone who actually cares about their cars…

It is far better to throughly hand wash, polish and wax your car and leave it dirty for long periods of times in between said hand washes….then to consistently take your car through those crappy automatic washes that just damage the paint over time with harsh chemicals. Not to mention those car wash brushes pick up so much grime and dirt from all the prior cars which causes more swirl marks into your paint..
