Hello everybody,
I'm currenty a college student here in iowa studying criminal justice. I've talked with my uncle, who is a cop in boyton beach, and asked what cities should i look at applying at in florida. One of the ones he told me was Orlando.
Now i was wondering if Orlando has a good reputation with people with in the city?

The bad guys aren't too fond of them but no problems with the general public.

One thing you should consider is that OPD truly is an urban police force. What I mean by that is the actual city of Orlando, meaning within the city limits, that OPD patrols is a relatively small but developed area. The only area that I can think of that may be a little less developed is the Airport, but in general the OPD cops are in what's considered "downtown" and the heavily developed "tourist corridor". I guess what I'm getting at is it's probaly a high "action" type of force where if you were say a county deputy who patrols rural or suburban Orange county you may get less "action." This is all just my speculation so take it for what it's worth. Also, in my experience, the OPD is a fairly young and more diverse force than most in FL.

I appreciate them a lot because they put up with a lot for what I consider to be a meager wage.

I have all the respect in the world for them. They get no slack from elements of the public and most of the media, but I have never heard any complaints from any upstanding citizen who has dealt with them. I think they try and do all they can within their limited budget and with no help from the court system.

In my personal experience, they were able to arrest the guys who stuck a gun in my face before I even finished giving a complete description to the 911 dispatcher.

I have seen some of them (cops) seem to get into trouble themselves. Some dont seem too professional if you ask me. Some of which didnt show up to court to put scumbags in jail because they overslept and didnt make it to court on time to testify, etc...

Also, Orlando is now pretty dangerous. (Think: Miami, Memphis, Tampa)

My cousin was just accepted into the SWAT force of Orlando Police Force, but as far as I can tell he doesn't get as much action as he did in Miami (of course). Most people here are respectful of policemen... the hoodlums are just talk. They may say rude things about them to their friends, but would never approach an actual police officer. The police here are fierce. When I got robbed at my store they had arrested the suspect before I could even finish writing my statement.

Orlando is actually considered the most dangerous place in Florida. Im sure it is a good Dept. You will get a lot of action. Its not exactly one of the bigger Departments in the country but its a good sized one. I am sure your uncle knows a lot just listen to him.
