I've been reading some things about how Orlando is growing fast and set to become a major employment center--is this just a bunch of hype? Is the growth in $8/hr. service jobs, or are there decent job opportunities? thanks!

Most of the jobs are in the "Service and Hospitality industry" and the vast majority of these jobs are in fast food, parks (which pay a max of $9/h), bus drivers, hotel housekeepers, doormen, bell boys, gas station attendent, janitorial services, and etc.

Check OrlandoJobs.com or CarrerBuilder.com and see for yourself. There are very few jobs that require BA or higher and the ones that do have so many applicants per position that most companies keep the pay rate low (as low as they can).

The "job explosion" is a bunch of crap, as most of these jobs are extremely low-paying jobs. The only job explosion is an explosion of low paying jobs and the aftershock of the explosion blew the good jobs away from Orlando.

My son is a soon to be graduate with a computer science degree from UCF and already has a couple of job offers and he hasn't even been looking yet - they found him. I don't know any unemployed people at the moment and none of them are minimum wage/service workers. I do know the HiTech Corridor that is to be build in east Orlando is slated to bring even more jobs to the area.

Default thanks!

I am in the IT field (been in it for years). I do not need/expect a great salary at this point, but to know that I will probably be able to find something is reassuring!

Tech jobs are few and hard to get. Pay sucks. I hear complaints all the time.

I would suggest Texas, Washington state (not DC), or Oregon for awsome paying IT jobs.

Default Oregon???

I used to post frequently on a tech board -- the Oregonians were desperate to get out, they said the state was an economic dead zone. This was in 2002/3, but I doubt things have changed that much???
