Nope to the pope

I had one too, a Sport Spider. FIAT stands for "Fix It Again, Tony".

What is the point of riding in a Fiat with 5 hulking Suburbans in tow? What’s the saving?

A clown car?

We do. Thank you for realizing how knowledgeable and, well, brilliant we are.

The Fiat 500 is one of the best selling cars in Europe, has a 5 star ENCAP safety rating, and is raved about by automotive journalists, even Jeremy Clarkson said he liked it. European celebrities drive them instead of Land Rovers and Priuses.

I doubt it was a set up where fiat paid off the pope in some bid to increase sales in the US. Francis wanted to get rid of the Mercedes because a pope shouldn't be seen living in opulence. People like Pope Francis because he is the first pope to practice what he preaches.

I love when some old 50-60 somehing tells me what a "gay", little, unsafe, worthless car a Fiat or a Smart car is but then they spew odd admiration for the Volkswagen beetle. It happens so often and its hilarious.

"Yeah man I used to have a 73 super beetle with the 1600, that was a great car, lots of memories." Maybe lots of memories, but great car? No. The VW kafer or Beetle or whatever is an automotive abomination. I cant believe people are paying 10k for nostalgia. These is poorly built, under powered, unreliable, tin cans are only suitable for third world roads or wreckers.

Fiats are much more reliable now. ISO 9000 standards have made cars super reliable by controlling the quality standards of parts suppliers where as they used to get contracts based on cronyism and had no real quality controls.

That said, I wouldn't buy one.

Rented a Fiat 500 at the Philly airport a couple years ago. It was a fun car and worked great for driving in the city, could park it on a dime. My question is how would it be in 5-6 years?

I agree, I used to own a 1978 Fiat 124 Spyder back in the 1980's.
It was a great looking convertible but, like the Pope, I had to say a prayer every time I got in it.
My prayer was that it would get me back home at the end of wherever I was going.
