I wasn't sure where to put this, so if it can be redirected thanks. Today when I was walking out to the garage, I saw a tiny bird--no bigger than maybe2/3 the size of a thumb--in the grass. I thought it was dead, but then I saw the little mouth gaping open like it was anticipating food from a mother bird. This is right below a birdhouse and I am seeing birds in the area, but this little thing is sort of hidden by the longish grass. It doesn't have any feathers even, the eyes aren't open, it looks to me like it shouldn't even be hatched. I set a small lid with bird food in it kind of by it so that maybe if a bird went to that it would see this baby. I also have a feeder right by the birdhouse. I don't want to touch it, it's so frail looking I'd be afraid of hurting it if I tried to move it. This is heartbreaking to me.
A friend of mine's neighbor was hit by the recent tornadoes here and she gathered the nests she could find and the baby birds and I guess it worked as far as reuniting them with the mothers, but I can't get in touch w/my friend to ask her.
Wow,,, I’d try picking up the baby bird with a tissue (not to handle it my hand) and putting it back into the nest or birdhouse. It’s too young to survive on it’s own outside the nest and the mother can’t get it back up there. Try to keep human scent off of the bird.
The only entry to this birdhouse is a really small hole, and I can't see any way I could fit it through there without injuring it. Also, I think there are birds in there, but I dont' know, it's pretty high traffic. I wondered if a mother bird could move it or not. I've been watching to see if any birds notice it, but I'm trying to stay out of sight so they stick around.
We have had this happen a few times here. I called some rescue places and they said the scent thing is not true. Still not sure about that myself. The bird is really to small to survive ( breaks my heart to say). We have tried several times to save them and lost them all.
No, I cant' see a way to do that. This isn't a store bought birdhouse, it's one that someone made for a craft show and he gave it to my son for helping. I am seeing birds flying in and out of there and I think they just aren't seeing this little thing. I'm gonna try to make that area more noticeable but I wonder, will a mother bird know that a baby is missing? I can see them flying in and out of that birdhouse. I couldn't ever see a way to open this up and I know you're supposed to clean them out when they are empty.
By the way, I am not trying to shoot down your suggestions, I am just saying that from what I can see, I can't get it back into that birdhouse. And there are birds in and out of there but I don't know if there are any babies in it right now. Sometimes I can see the little mouths poking through the hole when the mother comes to feed them. Now I'm just seeing bigger ones. All around this one, but not seeing it.

If one of them is sick the mom will toss them out of the nest. No time to fuss with the ones that aren't going to make it. Sounds awful but that's how nature works. Only the strong survive.
Sorry you had to find the little thing.
