Just sitting here browsing on CD..........and..........BANG! The light bulb in the lamp, on the table, next to my chair, where I was sitting, literally EXPLODED!
Glass flew everywhere! Thank goodness one of my cats wasn't sitting there right next to the lamp!
Just got done running the sweeper and carefully looking all around for tiny shards of glass.
The bulb was an incandescent 3 way, 50, 100, 150.....it was on the 50 watt setting when it exploded.
I put a new bulb in the lamp and everything seems OK.
The TV was on, clock plugged in......not a blip, so it couldn't have been some type of power surge. Heck, my laptop was plugged into the same receptacle as the lamp......all OK.
Has anyone ever had a light bulb explode like this?
Guess my heart is in pretty good shape.......that was better than a stress test!
Location: I never said I was perfect so no refunds here sorry!

Not a normal occurrence in my years here on earth! I think I'd keep a close eye on that lamp and not leave the house with it plugged in or go to sleep with it plugged in either

That is a good idea.....glad you mentioned it. I will do that. Better safe than sorry.
Probably just an impurity in the glass or elements etc. Very rare occurrence! Could have been grease external on the glass. With Halogen bulbs for instance, you must keep them oil free (no fingerprints even). They'll explode as they get very hot.
3 way lamps are notorious for vibrating slightly loose, creating a miniscule space that causes arcing. Every so often I check and tighten the lamp to make good contact.
If any lamp comes loose and arcs slightly the lead at the base will melt somewhat creating an air space. Take the bulb out and check the base for burned spot where the shiny lead is. If it looks blacken or not smoothe it will not make proper contact, then take a emery board or fine sandpaper and smooth it round again.
That link......so it DOES happen.....so no ghosties. LOL!
Tightening the bulb once in awhile sounds like a good idea and easy to do.
I sure hope it was just a defective bulb {it was a Sylvania}. It wasn't very old either. This lamp is one of a pair in my livingroom and I don't want to have to replace it. I have been using the lamp for hours now and everything seems OK.
I cringe when I think of all of the times one of my cats has sat there in the summer staring at some tiny bug flitting around the bulb.........they certainly won't be allowed to do that anymore. I shudder when I think of what could have happened to their eyes. {{ }}
Funny, I am no spring chicken and I have never heard of a light bulb exploding.......sure glad it wasn't one of those new mercury filled bulbs!
I have acquired a new respect for light bulbs today.
It could have been worse, I always sit here with my nice ,hot, morning cup of coffee while I watch the morning news.
