Amazing what you don't realize about the streets you walk on every day.
As an aside I found a white gold/yellow gold ring in the parking lot of my client the jeweler one day and took in to him in case someone claimed it. After a couple of weeks no one did and he gave it to me. After a few months we took it back and sold it to him for the price of the gold.

I've seen the story of the urban miner on TV. He's doing pretty well so far, considering there's no overhead except the cost of a bucket and a digging tool! Seems pretty stupid, though, that he did an interview for national TV. Now he's sure to get some competition.
A couple years ago I was walking barefoot in my hotel room when I stepped on something embedded in the carpet that was quite sharp. I was not happy until I saw it was a diamond about a carat in size. No one ever claimed it so the hotel gave it back to me.

Hey! That was mine! Tell me what hotel it was and I'll confirm it's mine.

It was the hotel just down the road from the airport.

Did you sell it and how much did you get? We do want our share.

It is still riding around in my flight bag. The jeweler that looked at it said it was worth $3,000 to $4,000. Somehow I do not think it will be worth as much once I smash it into pieces so that eveyone can have their share of it.
