Okay I'm thinkin' I'm headed for a mid-life crisis here so help me out. I want to re-invent who I am. I really like myself. heck I think the world of myself! However I want to make a few changes, nothing drastic like getting a new wife or anything. I'm going back to college to get my master's degree. I've always wanted to play the saxophone. Never had the opportunity as a kid because I was told how expensive it was. That's another story I won't go into great detail about. But the biggest change I want to make is that I'd like to get a motorcycle. Sound crazy? I mean I don't want to be a Harley rider, grow what little hair I have long and wear leather....just want to learn how to drive a motorcycle and go cruisin'. So does this sound like the onset of a mid-life crisis? I turned 40 at the beginning of this year and have been relatively sane for the most part. Maybe there is more of me to explore and I'm overthinking all of this. Any thoughts here?
And what do you deem as a mid-life crisis? When my dad turned 40 (back in the early 1980s) he got a girlfriend or two, new car and acted really weird. I just don't want to turn out that way.
What did you do when you hit mid-life? Anything different, kooky or did you question yourself in this manner?
I think it is perfectly normal for anyone to pursue happiness. Life is indeed short. So why not get out there and live a little. You've made it this far, your healthy, so you should go do the things you've always wanted to and could/did not. The only thing holding you back is you! And...there is more to motorcycles than Harlies. I rode one for 10 years. They ain't all that believe me. Sorry if I've offended any diehard bikers out there...but it's true.
My life began at 40 because I got married one month before I turned 40
I say take the saxophone lessons and forget the motorcycle. To me they're just to scary. The best thing I think you can do for turning 40 is take the best care of yourself you can because you want to be around for those grandkids!
I say go for it - do both the saxophone and the Harley A happy and content husband make a happy and content wife too - I wouldn't suggest doing what your father did
My husband has a racecar that he takes to the dragstrip and two (unfinished) cars in the garage - hey, I hate looking at them, but it makes him happy - which in turn makes me happy.
Life is short so go knock yourself out with whatever it is ya wanna do! I think it would really blow laying in some hospital bed at 106 years old getting ready to take your last breath wishing you would have done all of this stuff. Course it would really suck getting mashed like a bug by a big truck while rolling down the highway on your donorcycle too. Man, tough choices we must face each day eh!
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, your body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, "Woo hoo! What a ride!"
My daddy was 65 when he got his Master's. He remarried at 76 to a very lovely lady who had an adopted daughter, age 10. He will be 80 this birthday and having the time of his life. Just spent 4 weeks out in the west trail riding with his wife and youngest.
I say go for whatever makes you happy...as long as the wife agrees. Liz
