Howdy kids! I hope everyone had a safe and fun July 4. Scroll on down for Today's Tip.
DON'T BREED MOSQUITOES!
It's the height of mosquito season in my area. I thought I'd share a few quick reminders and tips on things you can to do keep down the skeeter population in your yard.
Mosquitoes require standing water in order to reproduce. Contrary to popular belief, they do not breed in grass, shrubs or trees. If you dispose of any sources of standing water in your yard, you can significantly decrease the mosquito population.
Get rid of any old tires, tin cans, buckets, or any containers that can hold water.
Fill in or drain any low places in your yard where water tends to puddle.
Empty plastic wading pools at least once a week.
Fill in tree rot holes and hollow stumps that hold water, using sand or concrete.
Change the water in bird baths every few days. Consider installing a fountain or drip in your bird bath, or adding a device which stirs the water. Mosquitoes won't lay egges in moving water.
Make sure rain gutters are clean so that water can flow freely and exit via the drain pipe.
I found this interesting blurb in a note which I received from my city's water department a few days ago: Some mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water where they hatch in just a day or two. Other mosquitoes may lay their eggs in old tires or other items which can hold water. The eggs may remain unhatched for weeks or even months until they are covered with water! So, after any significant rainfall remember to remove any standing water from your yard and help keep mosquitoes from hatching.

Standing water in the desert? Yes, there are the mirages you see, occasionally, when you're driving in the desert, which look so incredibly real, like the one south of Primm, where, in the summertime, it looks like a huge shimmering lake, and you expect to see boats out there! One year, incredibly, that dry lake actually filled up with real water, thanks to some extra-heavy El Nino rains.
The problem we have in Foreclosure City U.S.A. is the abandoned homes with swimming pools, and the city is very vigilant, and diligent in locating them, with the help of complaining neighbors, and draining all that green water before there's an infestation of mosquito's.
I do keep a large dishpan of water in my courtyard, which my ferret uses as a swimming pool!

No standing water around here but they still seem to be buzzing around anyway. Guess you can't help what the neighbors do. Great tips Pam, if I see any standing water I'm going to vacuum it up!
Good tips.
Also if you're traveling in MN or WI be sure to invest a mosquito saddle as those are super sized rideable kind... Right MBW.
Yeah, no kidding. They grow 'em big up there!

That's a very good summer tip. After each rain here, I tip the flower pots on the lanai to remove the water accumulated in the saucers.
