Good morning peevers.

Mrs J is off to New York on business in just over a week and I was looking to go with her.

The flight out was a reasonable price (£209- about $330).

The flight back is, and I'm talking about economy class- £1305! That's around $2000.

I can only assume that it's because it comes just before a long weekend here in the UK.

It's a shame because I would have been staying 'free' near Central Park and had cabs to and from the airport paid for.

Needless to say I'm not going on that trip.

How many times have you started pricing something up, and it seems to be reasonable, until some massive additional cost scuppers your plans?

Tell us your experiences as the POTD is;

Wow! That's more than I bargained for!

Oh my Gosh! That is terrible. I live in a state that doesn't have a big hub so unfortunately, the prices for me to travel to Cali to see my family is pricey. What's really creepy, is when I look for prices, then look again from the same computer the prices go up>>>they are spying on me

Amen to that.....I tried to book a hotel for our October trip to the Gulf of Mexico. I had checked about a month ago and it was around a $100 a night. (hmmm why didn't I book it then!) Now the same nights, same hotel, is $197 per night. I will be finding a different hotel .... or not going on our trip.

Sorry you won't be able to come to USA Jez....springtime in NY is nice.

A few years ago I realized that even though I'm at the very tip of Central America I'd never been to Colombia (our neighbor to the east). Ever since 'Romancing the Stone' I'd wanted to visit Cartagena. Anyway, was checking out flights and figured since I was so close the cost would be reasonable I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw the price - would have been cheaper to fly from Miami to Cartagena than from Panama. Needless to say, that killed that idea.

Wow that 's a BIG difference in price! I'm thinking it costs less to come to the U.S. because it's all down hill. Nobody want's to fly and come the to the states but they "all" want to fly and get OUT of here. It's the heavy booking of flights OUT of the country that caused the rates to go up.

Rates can vary between airports as well. We just booked a trip and tickets prices varied quite a bit. Some that were more expensive were one-stop whereas the one we booked was one of the cheapest and was non-stop.

Go figure.

Sorry the trip to NYC didn't pan out for you, Jezer.

This is a good peeve. My most recent eye-opener about travel expenses was when I traveled to and from Florida for my recent cruise. Between airline tix and cab fares, the trip cost a lot more than originally anticipated. Crap!

I'll be going to Europe for the first time this fall. I've already paid for airline tix and hotel rooms but have no idea what to expect to shell out for meals and public transportation. I do know the cost of a couple of excursions we're planning. I'm going with seasoned travelers, and they keep assuring me the cost won't be too bad. We'll see! They make a lot more money than I, so their idea of "not too bad" may be different from mine. I've been saving up for a long time, though, so I'm sure it'll all work out.
