SAN DIEGO – What do the San Diego Police Department, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Royal Family of Spain have in common? They’ve all been sued by Pamela Stickler.
The 47-year-old San Diego woman has filed nearly 80 lawsuits in county and federal courts over the last two decades. Her targets include political figures like Bill Clinton, companies like Marriott, agencies like the Federal Transit Administration, and average citizens.
In a perfect world, you could file these kinds of lawsuits -- and if you lost, you would be on the hook for the legal costs of the person you were suing, as well as damages. If this were the case, you would see people like this quickly disappear.
But trial lawyers are HUGE political donors to one party, so it's unlikely we'll see tort reform in the next 50 years.
I've often wondered why Americans tend to sue more than Canadians....Now I know, as in Canada when you lose you pay....
Seeking justice in Canada is expensive. Soon, it may not be worth taking a case to court unless more than $100,000 is at stake, says Ron Slaght, a Toronto civil litigation lawyer.
A three-day civil trial is likely to cost at least $60,738 – more than the median family income in Canada of $58,100. The estimate is conservative because trials often take longer than three days. If you lose, you may be ordered to pay some or all of your opponent's legal costs.
