Yeah, in 1976 (I think) I was invited to see "Jaws" the evening before its release - at a Universal Studios private theater - and there were reclining chairs - with an ashtray at EACH one. I didn't smoke during the movie - but I was pretty amazed by it - even at that time.
When I smoked everybody else seemed to smoke too. So I wasn't ashamed or enbarrassed. I knew it was bad for you but I was so addicted I couldn't stop. Then the prices went up and places started banning smoking in some public places. Then I got tired of feeling crumby from smoking and I had a cancer scare so after 28 years I finally quit.
Maybe there were latent rage issues? I don't know. It was kind of scary to watch, though.
As far as hiding it...My neighbor smokes. She never hid it from me so I wasn't aware it was a secret. One day I was over there and we were going to sit on her porch. I asked her if she wanted me to grab her cigarettes and lighter and shushed me. Once on the porch she told that her kids don't know she smokes and she doesn't want them to know because it's against their religion. I have never understood why smokers don't know that others, especially non-smokers, can smell it.
I don't really mind if people want to keep their secrets, but it's helpful to know that beforehand.
yes, saying quitting nicotine is harder than quitting heroin, sounds wrong. I didn't come out with that but heard it many times. They say it to show people to scare people away from it I guess or to show compassion to those who try to quit and can't do it in the first try.
I know grown ups who are afraid to tell their parents about their smoking. it's odd...why hide it and lie about it?

Still a smoker here, and I AM ashamed of my bad habit. Always have been but it's not enough apparently to keep me from smoking. I roll my own cigarettes to save money but it's still a very expensive, unhealthy habit to break.
Me? No way. Like I said earlier i'm a heavy smoker myself. Been for a long time. I would never judge a fellow smoker. I was just pointing out that current smoker are not eligible for lung transplants.
