Okay, I'll give this a whack. If you count short straight lines and long straight lines, I'm going to guess 72 but if you just count long straight lines, I guess 48.
Short straight lines would be when both the minute and hour hand are on top of each other. It runs from one number to the middle of the clock face (example: 10 minutes after 2). There are 12 numbers and that happens twice a day as in AM and PM, equaling 24.
Long straight lines would be like 20 minutes to 2 (example: starts at 8 and goes straight across the clock face to 2) There are 12 numbers and that happens twice a day at AM and PM equaling 24. But, unlike with the short straight lines, there is also when the hour hand and the minute hand switch positions (example: 20 minutes to 2 is the opposite of 10 minutes after 8). There are 12 numbers and that also happens twice a day at AM and PM also equaling 24. So, 24 + 24 + 24 = 72.
Short Line = 24
Long line = 48
Total = 72
If you don't count short straight lines (two hands on top of each other), my answer is 48. If you count both long and short straight lines my answer is 72. Okay, where did I go wrong?
You know, when you go to the doctor when you are old like me, once a year they make you draw a clock face when the test gives you a time. I keep telling them, "But I'm wearing a watch. Isn't that like cheating?" But, there's no math with that test.
