TODAY'S QUESTIONS

Do you use a knife steel to hone your kitchen knives? Yes, fairly often.

Do you store kitchen knives:
in a knife block? Used to, but got tired of it taking up so much space on my small counter.
on a magnetic strip on the wall?
in a drawer? Yeppers.
other (specify)?

Do you know that sharp steel knives (carving knives, steak knives, etc.) should be hand washed and should not be cleaned in your dishwasher? Yep. I learned this decades ago when my sister sold housewares in a department store. She attended seminars to learn how to care for things such as knives, crystal and China. At her seminar at Chicago Cutlery, she learned that the super-hot water and detergent in a dishwasher dulls blades and is also bad for the wood handles. She passed that info along to me.

Do you keep spices:
in a spice rack? I have about a dozen in a spice rack on the wall.
in a pantry? I have about two dozen in a pantry cabinet in my kitchen.
in a kitchen cabinet?
in a drawer?
other (specify)?

Do you own a mortar and pestle? Yep. If so, do you use them? Yep. I use them to crush herbs and spices before I add them to soups and stews.

If you own a coffee grinder, have you ever used it to grind something other than coffee beans? Yes. I use it to grind nuts for baking. When I do, I leave a little bit of the nut crumbs behind so the next time I grind coffee it'll taste a little nutty.

Does your refrigerator have an automatic ice cube maker? No. I don't mind filling ice trays.

Does your kitchen trash can have a pedal to lift the lid? Yes.

What material are your kitchen countertops made of? Some sort of cheap Formica, I think.

Are you happy with your kitchen's design? Nope. I hate it. It's not a cook's kitchen at all. Very small with very little counter space. No exhaust fan over the stove. I don't think I'll ever have the money to have it remodeled.

Is your stove/oven gas or electric? Gas. Must have gas appliances. I had electric in a couple of my apartments many years ago and I hated cooking on electric burners. With gas it's so much easier to control the heat.

Does your oven self-clean? Yeppers.

TODAY'S QUESTIONS

Do you use a knife steel to hone your kitchen knives?
https://www.chicagocutlery.com/produ...arpening-steel
Yes, I have one of those.

Do you store kitchen knives:
  • in a knife block?
  • on a magnetic strip on the wall?
  • in a drawer?
  • other (specify)? <---- There are knife slots in my kitchen work table for the big knives.

Do you know that sharp steel knives (carving knives, steak knives, etc.) should be hand washed and should not be cleaned in your dishwasher?
Yes, I knew that.
Do you keep spices:
  • in a spice rack?
  • in a pantry?
  • in a kitchen cabinet? <---- Yes, on Rubbermaid two-tier carousels so I can find what I need quickly.
  • in a drawer?
  • other (specify)?

Do you own a mortar and pestle? If so, do you use them?
Yes, I do. I haven't used them in a while.
If you own a coffee grinder, have you ever used it to grind something other than coffee beans?
Yes, I have a coffee grinder that I've used for pulverizing spices.
Does your refrigerator have an automatic ice cube maker?
No. It has that option, but we never installed it. I'm fine with ice cube trays.
Does your kitchen trash can have a pedal to lift the lid?
No, it's under the sink.
What material are your kitchen countertops made of?
Vintage 1963 butter yellow tile (yuck) that is in poor condition (double yuck). I'm in the process of trying to decide what I want to replace it with, but there are too many choices out there.
Are you happy with your kitchen's design?
No, it's L-shaped and everything is concentrated in one corner. I'd prefer a U-shapes or triangular layout.
Is your stove/oven gas or electric?
It's vintage 1986 electric, and it desperately needs to be replaced.
Does your oven self-clean?
Yes, I wouldn't have it any other way. Cleaning ovens by hand is nasty!

Thanks, Pammy!

Hello, everyone! Scroll on down to see what I came up with for

TODAY'S QUESTIONS

Do you use a knife steel to hone your kitchen knives?
https://www.chicagocutlery.com/produ...arpening-steel

I have it. Came with the knife set. Seldom used, though. I have a set of whet stones that i use.

Do you store kitchen knives:
  • in knife block(s)
  • on a magnetic strip on the wall?
  • in a drawer?
  • other (specify)?

Do you know that sharp steel knives (carving knives, steak knives, etc.) should be hand washed and should not be cleaned in your dishwasher?

I don't have dishwasher. Not useful for one person household.

Do you keep spices:
  • in a spice rack?
  • in a pantry?
  • in a kitchen cabinet?
  • in a drawer?
  • other (specify)?

That's my spice rack with spices commonly used. The less used spices are in a cabinet.

Do you own a mortar and pestle? If so, do you use them?

Something like that. A rough clay bowl and a wooden stick with a ball-shaped end.
It has special uses explained here:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makitra

If you own a coffee grinder, have you ever used it to grind something other than coffee beans?

I have it somewhere in the garage. Not used in years - i don't drink coffee. Everything else i chop/mince per hand.

Does your refrigerator have an automatic ice cube maker?

No. I don't use ice cubes for anything.

Does your kitchen trash can have a pedal to lift the lid?

My trash can is in a trash cabinet.

What material are your kitchen countertops made of?

Beautiful butcher block.

Are you happy with your kitchen's design?

Yes!! It's a big kitchen with lots of space and three big windows. I designed the (peninsula) layoff myself. It's also completely enclosed with an entry door. No open space floorplan in my house

Is your stove/oven gas or electric?

Unfortunately it's electric. Not my preference, though. Back home i have gas and love it!

Does your oven self-clean?

Yes. Never used it, though.

That's the end of today's kitchen questions, kiddos. Have a fantastic Tuesday, and don't forget to commit an act of kindness before it's over.

Thanks, Pam. Fun questions!

TODAY'S QUESTIONS

Do you use a knife steel to hone your kitchen knives?
https://www.chicagocutlery.com/produ...arpening-steel
My wife does.
Do you store kitchen knives:
  • in a knife block? Yes
  • on a magnetic strip on the wall? No
  • in a drawer? Yes
  • other (specify)? In sheathes in the drawer. And some are ceramic.

Do you know that sharp steel knives (carving knives, steak knives, etc.) should be hand washed and should not be cleaned in your dishwasher?
No. I wonder why.
Do you keep spices:
  • in a spice rack? Yes
  • in a pantry? Yes
  • in a kitchen cabinet? No
  • in a drawer? No
  • other (specify)? Yes. There's a shelf that "floats" about 18 inches all around our countertop and we have a few there. We also have a little standalone cabinet that has some grilling spices.

Do you own a mortar and pestle? If so, do you use them?I used to, but it was made of wood and ultimately I didn't think it was sanitary---not sure I could get it completely clean. I saw a stone one not long ago...yike$$$!

If you own a coffee grinder, have you ever used it to grind something other than coffee beans?
I think my wife has, but I haven't.
Does your refrigerator have an automatic ice cube maker? Yes

Does your kitchen trash can have a pedal to lift the lid? No, that was relegated to the garage. Ours has a battery, motion detector.

What material are your kitchen countertops made of? Tile

Are you happy with your kitchen's design? As a kitchen, yes but as it relates to the rest of the house, no. At our last place you could cook at the stove and look into the living room, converse with guests etc. Here you're isolated from that.

Is your stove/oven gas or electric? Electric, with halogen style burners. We prefer gas but that's what came with the house and running gas to it now would be expensive.

Does your oven self-clean? Yes, probably. It's fairly new.

That's the end of today's kitchen questions, kiddos. Have a fantastic Tuesday, and don't forget to commit an act of kindness before it's over.
