Following yesterday's "sports" theme-

Cheerleaders in the NFL-are they really necessary?

The thought or purpose has been for lack of a better word diluted with sex and exposed bodies, TV commercials and money.

Necessary sure, I bet there is big money and promotional opportunities for those people!

ABSOLUTELY NOT!! To quote a famous NFL head coach, Chuck Noll, (Pittsburgh Steeler fame)....The media once asked him..."why don't you have cheerleaders?" to which Chuck replied..."We do have cheerleaders--60,000 of them in the stands every Sunday!" Gosh, I loved that man!

I don't think so. But then again that is my opinion. I never watch the game anyway.

I am going to have to disagree with you guys on this one. If the only reason you go to a football game is to watch the game, you might as well stay home and watch it on TV. People go to the game to have a good time. There are the tailgate parties, the food, and being able to behave like little kids. The cheerleaders are there to keep the festive mood going.

I often wondered this too but have to agree withDblR on his answer.
Other than bring in the money......no. Get em off the field or hit em with a fast football. See what happens then. LOL

I guess cheerleading is one of those sportly traditions, even in highschool...but for someone to be paid to do it....ummmmmm.....better use of a body and brain. (wait...maybe I'm onto something)

What would the fans at the game watch during TV time out? Given the choice between cheerleaders or live commercials I have to go with the good looking young ladies.

Paid eye candy as MistyVT pointed out (I'm paraphrasing of course) - one thing if they say volunteered in order to get the exposure on TV for potential 'other gigs', but to be paid to show T&A and jump around? Well heck sign me up LOL Like Tex said re Chuck Noll - the FANS are the cheerleaders - heck in CO we had the Barrel Man LOL could be snowing like a mother and there he was (and EVERY team has a, well, you know lol 'die hard fan'). I say use elizamary's idea of hitting them with a real fast thrown FB - Maybe the QB could even use them to practice accurately thowing the FB
