Here are some suggestions for preventing your neighbor's dog from using your lawn.

Most of these tips are from a Gardening Web site that thinks the problem is mostly the dog prefers your lawn over your neighbors. I haven't tried these ideas myself, but here are their suggestions. I personally have a different theory--that the problem is the owner of the dog. So, I have a different idea that worked for us. I'm putting it in a follow up post.

1. Change your fertilizer. Some animals react strongly to different smells. If you've been using organic fertilizers try using a chemical one for a short period and vice versa.

2. Change your watering times. Neighbors usually walk their dogs at the same time. If they see you out watering, they'll move on. Same thing if the sprinklers are already going. Even having the lawn wet may deter the animal.

3. Post a sign saying "Poison Ivy" or "Danger, chemical used to treat lawn are dangerous to dogs."

Tip of The Day features ideas I hear about--not always ones I've tried. They sound good to me in theory and who knows--some of them (hopefully most of them) may be brilliant. Anyway, the point of this thread is to start some fun conversations. By all means jump in and add jokes, comments, and even your own tips, if you'd like.

But the dogs on my street can't read. They are supposed to be, I repeat supposed to be kept on a leash. During the night any strange howling as they head home is nothing I caused. No, no way.

I don't think any of my neighbors would buy it since I have my own dog outside all the time...lol...luckily I don't have a stray dog issue in my neighborhood either.

Hose down the owner not the dog.

I sprinkle 'cayenne pepper' around the areas where the dogs trespass. And if they should pee, I pour vinegar on the spot so they don't use it again.
It's a shame some people don't take responsibility or use courtesy when owning a dog.
Ignoring leash laws and trespassing is one of my pet peeves.

It's interesting that this is a very different issue depending on whether you live in the country where dogs roam free, or you live in a more urban area with strict leash laws.

I can see the tip about changing fertilizer working where dogs run free, since unleashed dogs are more able to choose which lawns they visit. Where I live, it's more about the owner, and where he chooses to walk the dog and then stop for awhile.

Here's the solution that worked for us:

We asked the local kids to write chalk messages on the sidewalk next to our yard. "Please don't let your dog poop here" is surprisingly effective when written in kids hand writing. We have the kids update it fairly often, which I think helps too. In my neighborhood most people are considerate enough not to let their dogs use an area where kids regularly play.

Maybe that's because no self-respecting dog is willing to go to Kitty-garten?

This was once a problem for me as the next door neighbor's dog used our lawn for his favorite poop spot. After a few days, when there was a goodly supply of poop, I would go out with a shovel, scoop it up and toss it back into the neighbor's yard.

No English is not their primary language. Try signs in Pig Latin.
