YES! This should be a REQUIREMENT for all parents. She did the right thing.

All parents should be required to take a refresher course in parenting when their kids reach their early tweens. The refresher course should include things like, "what to do if your kid gets in trouble with the law...(don't bail him / her out), what to do if your kid starts doing illegal drugs, reliable ways to tell if your teen is lying (don't believe your teen), personal discussions you should have with your kids, positively socializing your teen (don't let him / her hang with the wrong crowd), how to keep your teen out of trouble (get him / her involved in a sport or hobby), how to prepare your teen for the real world (sign your child up for volunteer work, or help your teen get a job or start a small career and earn money), How to have 'the talk' (let them talk and ask questions, you listen and answer the questions. If you don't know something, Google is your friend.). They should totally do this.

On a similar note, when I worked in a police department, this was actually quite common. The majority of the parents did not pick up their kids and let them sleep in a cold cell. I know the ones who don't often whine on here, but most parents are good.

This is an old story, but once, a guy was called to pick up his drunk idiot teen. He walked in, smacked the kid upside the head, and left. Without him. We loved that dad.
