LULEA, Sweden, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- A Swedish father said the photographer hired to take pictures for his 3-year-old daughter's preschool digitally removed her scar without permission.
Per Engman of Lulea said Thords foto altered the preschool class photo to remove a scar from the nose of his daughter, Meja Flymalm, The Local reported Friday.
I don't blame him for getting angry. The child has a scar and it shouldn't have been digitally removed without a request or permission from the parent(s).
In this day and age, everyone is looking for "perfection" and it's really a disgrace. Why can't people just be who they are?? Why do people feel the need for Botox, plastic surgery, hair plugs, etc, etc etc???? And why must every photograph be "digitally enhanced"???? The photo ends up looking nothing like the person actually looks! If you have a family photo album, no one in future generations is going to have a clue as to how you actually looked!
While I agree that it sends the girl the wrong message and should not have been done without permission. I think it's silly that he is so upset that he needed to go to the press about it, I'm sure the photographer had no ill intent to make it seem as if she was so hideous with it that it had to be removed, and a simple call to him or the business could have corrected the situation without all the fanfare.
I don't blame the father for getting angry. This sort of thing sets up expectations that just can't be met. Many photographers use relatively automated software for retouching these days - he may not have seen what he was changing (though it sounds like he did in the article). There's an ad in one of my recent photo mags that shows an example of acne scars and blotchy skin all being turned into "perfect" skin. It looks plastic to me, personally.
You can't win can you.
If I hired a guy to take photos and he did some photoshop my first thought would be 'this guy has done extra'. If I didn't want the touched up photos then I would not look at them
Every single school photo my kids had offerd "touch up" service at certain price points (ie: spend enough or buy a big enough package and they would eliminate flyaway hairs and acne spots, etc). In fact, my daughter just took her college graduation photos last week and this was something she wanted done so we ordered accordingly.
I don't know the details of this particular situation but I wouldn't make too big of an issue out of this if I were the dad.

And we make a copy and work on it... The original shot still has the scar in it...
