Someone at work told me today that her insurance covered her flu shot- said it was preventive medicine-I've always paid for mine-I thought this was strange- may call tomorrow just to find out
this is a frustration for me every year. our pediatrician uses an outside clinic to give the shots which is out of network, so we end up having to pay. This year I am getting my kids shots at my doctor because they are in network and will bill insurance.
My boys got the flu shot 2 wks ago at the Minute Clinic through CVS. Got my BC/BS statement today & it was covered. My dh's RX is through CareMark/CVS, so that may be the reason.
Have always gotten them through the peds but this yr just easier to do it at Minute Clinic.
Every plan is different-even if you have a BC/BS plan it might not be the same as your friend's BC/BS plan. Our plan does cover immunizations and we usually get them through Minute Clinic and they bill our insurance directly.
Some pharmacies are giving free flu shots. Check around your area.
Some pharmacies only have the adult vaccine available though, which contains thimerosol, so people should check first. Pediatricians generally use preservative-free vaccines which contain only trace amounts. Also, there are different manufacturers of the vaccine, and some are not recommended for young children due to the risk of seizures, see the link below. In addition, some children will need two shots.
As for being insured by insurance companies, not all will cover it, it varies.
There's always somewhere giving flu shots for free, such as a fire department, etc. My problem is I'm always too sick to get the flu shot when it's available for free. I can have it done at my doctor's office through my insurance, but it's a pain to go to his office. I usually end up paying to have it done at a pharmacy.
I know CVS is giving it, but only to people over 18. They take our insurance and it would be oh so convenient to go there instead of sitting in the doctor's office with sick people, so my boys will have to go the dr's office to get it. I know where we are last yr the schools had clinics that they gave flu shots at for free, but it was probably because of the H1N1 scare, it would be nice if they would do that this year. Sure beats sitting and waiting at the doctors.
just called- insurance only covers my 15 year old as preventive medicine- my 18 year old and I pay
